2001 hyundai santa fe, was running fine, went to crank it, all lights and chimes work, but it will not start. Not the battery, not the starter, thought possibly it was a transponder key, but was informed santa fe's do not have transponder keys. Any ideas?

Dear friend:this might sound stupid,but remove the key from the barrel and try again,then see if the dash lights dim when trying to start,if it does the battery is to flat to turn the engine,if it is a auto shift the lever slightly forward and backward to make sure it is not the neutral switch.

There is a piece inside that is prone to breaking. It makes the starter and flywheel connect

If you have no issues with your battery cables, I would say it is a starter solenoid that is the problem. As long as it clicks, the start circuit from the ignition switch to the starter is working, and the starter motor tests good, so likely the solenoid is the problem. Is the electrical wire on the solenoid tight?
If your car is stick, you have to make sure that the sensor in the brake pedal is ok. It can either be replaced or eliminated.
If it is automatic, make sure it is in Parking and that the indicator light for such is on. If it is not, then the sensor on the lever has to be replaced.
Otherwise, the carbons on the starter engine may be worn and will need to be repalced.
I have an 03 Santa Fe as well and just had the exact thing happen to me. One day, it just wouldn't turn over at all and I had to have it towed to the dealer. They replaced the "crank shaft position sensor" and now the car is fine. I am not sure if this is your problem but it might be worthwhile asking someone to check it out.
