My Malibu will not idle, you can keep it running if you give it gas but if you floor it it will go up to 4000 RPM's and start fluctuating, take you foot off the gas and it dies. If I keep it at 1000 RPM's it smells like the air fuel mixture is too rich.
4000 rpm and flucuating is normal. rpm limiter. If its too rich need to find out why. first thing to check is the fuel pressure regualtor, take off the vac hose to it, and if there is fuel in the hose, the regulator is bad and will need replacement. that is only 1 thing that could cause rich running but is always the first thing to check. if its running that bad there should be a service eng soon light on.
Testimonial: "Thanks, no eng light and no codes from OBD I checked that first hopping to give me a lead. I'll check out the pressure regulator."
It sounds like either and O2 sensor (primary or bank one) or it may be a MAF sensor have the car checked at an auto zone parts store for stored computer trouble codes, this chech is free and should point you in the right direction instesd of just replacing parts you may not need.
Testimonial: "Thanks, I needed some place to start checking, the OBD is reporting zero codes.(forgot to put that in my question.)"
