So I have a 1977 Toyota Hilux RV the fuel gauge doesn't read and I'm clueless to what the possible cause

I already know that the fuel sender does work because I hooked up an aftermarket gauge to test it but with the aftermarket gauge it reads over full so I'm clueless to what is wrong

Some general fuel gauge help here

https://www.google.com/search?q=1977+toyota+hilux+rv+fuel+gauge+not+working

But if it is really a 1977 Toyota Chinook, it doesn't have much on it. If the sender works to another gauge, it can only be the wiring to the gauge or the gauge itself. Does your aftermarket gauge have an adjustment screw on the back to calibrate it?

Fuel warning light on

its 1 of 2 things.
1: the fuel is low, use a dip stick, if gauge reads ok.
2; or the tank sender is bad, but gauge reads wrong.
3: the guage wire is disconnected, cut or corroded connections.

Fuel gauge reads correctly then goes to empty

9 times out of 10 the fuel pump/level sender assembly is the cause. Sometimes the gauge pod is faulty, and there have been cases where there were either poor connector pin fit issues and/or chaffed/melted/cut wires in the harness that leads back to the fuel pump. It is an extremely common fault and would be surprised if the pump/level sender assembly wasn't the cause.

I hope this info helps!

1977 toyota sr5 fuel gauge reads full when empty, what is the cause??

Try car-parts.com for used parts Nationwide. Its an internet connection of Salvage yards.

Use the Web browser and just type what you are looking for. 1977 Toyota SR5 fuel sending unit.

Some of the hits will be irrelevant, ridiculous, or funny, but you can also get leads from autoparts stores with new or rebuilt parts.

I hope my solution helps you. I use autoparts123.com or Rockauto.com to name a few.

Fuel gauge alwaya read full

The wire between the dash and the fuel tank is connected to ground somewhere. there is a control that fails too but if the control failed the temperture gauge also won't work. The wire can get in troble inside the tank too as if someone tried to steal the gas with a hose. if you can disconnect the connector ( wireing ) at the fuel tank and turn the key on and the gauge goes to empty you know the troble is inside the tank and the pump sender unit will need to be removed from the tank to correct the problem or even the gauge unit replaced.70198425.jpg

My fuel gauge is not working

if you know the wiring to the fuel guage is ok then could be the fuel sender in the tank,if the ssender is bad youll have to buy one and connect the wiring to the new sender andcheck it if it works fine then you ll have too replace it. if it doesn t then it s in the guage cluster. good luck

Have a 1988 hilux. The fuel gauge shows the fuel level even when the ignition is off. Otherwise it seems to work fine.

Toyota fuel gauges from that time were actually meant to work like that! It's not drawing power from your battery with the ignition off, the needle just stays at the last reading.
