A trunk lid is secured into position using a latch and striker similar to those used for the hood and doors. The striker is a U-shaped piece of metal fixed to the trunk lid. The latch is a mechanism that hooks around striker and holds it tightly until the latch release lever is pulled. Latch release levers can be actuated electronically via a solenoid and switch or mechanically via a cable and handle. The most common failure item with electronic systems is the solenoid actuator which is typically integrated into the latch itself. For manual release systems the most common failure items is the cable which tends to snap internally, especially if there is a problem with the latch such as binding. Accessing the trunk area to replace the necessary parts can be tricky if the trunk won't open; in these cases I'd recommend trying to open the trunk with the key (if it has a lock cylinder) otherwise the back seats will need to be laid down or removed in order to get to gain access. Replace the gasket and see if it continues. It is a pain to replace the PCV according to this. You may be able to clean it with carburetor cleaner when the rocker cover is off.
Luggage Compartment Description and Operation (Sedan)
Rear Compartment Lid Release
The rear compartment lid can be released in one of three ways:
• Inserting the key into the key lock cylinder, if equipped
• Operating the rear compartment lid release switch
• Using the keyless entry fob
To operate rear compartment lid with the rear compartment lid release switch or with the rear compartment release button on the key fob, the gear selector may be in any position, but vehicle speed must equal 0 for the rear compartment lid to release.
When the rear compartment lid release switch is pushed, the rear compartment lid release signal circuit to the body control module (BCM) is grounded. BCM then grounds the coil side of the trunk release relay through the trunk release relay control circuit. With this voltage is applied to the rear compartment lid release actuator, opening the rear compartment.
do you know how to do electrical testing ?
Circuit/System Verification
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Trunk Release Switch parameter while pressing and releasing the rear compartment lid release switch. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.
? If the parameter does not change, refer to Trunk Release Switch Malfunction.
Command the trunk release with a scan tool, the rear compartment lid latch should release the trunk lid.
? If the rear compartment lid latch does not release, refer to Rear Compartment Lid Latch Malfunction
CHECK FOR LOOSE BOLTS AT THE LATCH STRIKER IF BOLTS LOOSE MOVE STRIKER TO CORRECT POSITION SLOWLY CLOSE TRUNK LID UNTIL THE TRUNK LID LATCH AND LATCH STRIKER COME IN CONTACT TO CLOSE TRUNK.ONCE BOTH ADJUSTMENTS CORRECT. TIGHTEN THE LATCH STRIKER BOLTS TRUNK SHOULD NOW CLOSE.
This has to be done by pulling the bumper off. More then likely there will be a burned up harness (recurring problem with the 2008 Saturn Outlook) the cost from my Saturn dealership is $185.00 to replace the harness and bulb. Very poor engineering when you have to pay $185.00 to change a bulb.
