97 Toyota Caldina starting problem

First thing in the morning engine will crank but not fire. Cranks at full speed. Starts first time when paralleled with wife's car (jumper leads). Has new spark plugs, tested HT leads and new battery

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

so the car will not run (cranks ok) unless you jump it with another car? right? when jumoped, it starts every time. right?? were the plugs and wires replaced to fix this or did you replace them because? why was the battery replaced? I'm not clear on what exactly is happeneing and why these parts were replaced. What is the battery voltage when cranking? do you have spark when it doesnt start? do you have fuel pressure?

You could have a bad cylanod in your starter that's what is sounds like or you might need a new starter sence you have looked and tested everything else that's the only other peice of resenable equitment left and if thats not it you could try the O2 sencer in the car if that's bad or going out it will make a car act that way. if that's not it then your problem, lys in the corb. but i would try the cylanoid in the starter first and work your way up from there

Fortuner (CI engine). When hot, it cranks but why does it take a long time to restart?

Many possibilities. Leaking fuel injector flooding engine. Bad exhaust system clogging when hot. Bad coolant temp sensor.

Car will not start like its not catching fire , i have a 2008 suzuki xl7

old post. but will answer.
the starter only cranks the engine, that is it's only job.
if it cranks robustly (at crank shaft pulley ,see it) then its ok.
250 RPM is typical cranking speed. RPM
no starts are complex.
for any engine Gas, to start you needs 4 things.
  1. ALL FUSE TO EFI GOOD, TEST THEM. CEL glows key on?
  2. full engine compression and crank vacuum 5" HG or more.?>??
  3. Spark , try a fresh tune up with fresh spark plugs. all 6 sparking.?
  4. Fueling , must be right. not flooding , not starving
if spark and engine are good, all engines(most) will start with test fuel.
This one simple test. proves the engine is ok, and spark is ok.
and the fuel system is dead.
these checks , will let is work the 4 systems. that might fail.
this is the classic basics path.
and works 99.% of the time.

exceptions, are clogged melted cat.
or stuck wide open EGR
or ISC stuck closed, (no starting air.) use 10% throttle to prove that.
or flooding, if flooding use super secret unflood mode (opr guide)
hold the throttle (right foot) pedal to the floor, this cuts fueling
and the flooded engine starts, for full time or runs and floods and stalls again.
This is called basics , in all ASE books in print.
RTM.

I have a 97 corolla, when I first start it in the morning it starts fairly easy, but when it warms up and im running errands around town, it cranks longer before it wants to restart, and its getting worse,...

The engine coolant temperature sensor could be stuck in the cold mode. This would activate the cold start injector even with the engine warm--and flood the engine with too much fuel, making for long crank times. The engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) is usually located close to the thermostat housing. It has two wires coming from it. The coolant temperature sender for the dash gauge is not the same. It only has one wire and grounds through the engine block. It is easy to get them confused.

You have fuel runback.Replace the injector leak off pipes then try.If this does not work then have a non return valve fitted to your fuel supply pipe close as possible to the punp.Hope that was helpfull good luck.
