A/c compressor seized up?

Compressor made grinding noise for a few days before i could get it fixed. Belt snapped when tried to crank one day, put new belt on and cranked only to realize that a/c pulley was seized. My question is can i bypass the pulley for now till i have time to do a proper replacement? 2000 Mercury Sable Wagon LS Premium 3.0L Duratec Motor

Start saving your money; A/C work is going to cost you about 1300 USD. You can bypass the compressor pulley if you want to. You will need to get a different belt though

I was told i couldnt bypass on a duratec unless i put a bypass pulley on. Which requires me to remove the compressor right? Or can i bypass with a shorter belt? The pulley is at the bottom so i dont see why i wouldnt be able to

  • Brad Brown Sep 21, 2021

You can buy an after market pulley. You have to remove the existing compressor which I dont recommend for several reasons. 1. There is oil in the system that will leak, 2. You are letting air, moisture and contaminates into the system. 3. You dont have a recovery system to capture the freon that is in it now. Dorman makes a pulley for it and the cost is about 70 dollars.

Air con cool for a few days then won't get cool, stop and restart all good

Cars for years have been using a serpentine belt. The compressor only works if the belt is spinning. With the engine running check to make sure the belt is spinning consistently. The alternator or the water pump could be seizing up causing the belt to stop. Check your idler as well. Tension on the belt could be loose and again not turning everything.

My belt siezed and broke off earlier there was a grinding rattle in engine for past few days and my ac hasnt worked for more than a month

grinding noise was probably a bearing in ac compressor, when it froze up completely it stopped turning causing extreme wear on the belt ..so it broke... check ac compressor out , could be bearing only ..could be whole compressor ..have it fixed...when compressor is removed the hoses have to be disconnected of course so if it still has refrigerant in it, that will need to be recovered at a shop..the ac system will have to be vacuum pumped down and recharged anyway.

I have a 2001 Yukon XL 1500. I broke an AC belt. I had the belt replaced and the system recharged. It now makes a noise when you accelerate after start up. But that is the only time. AC blows cold...

Actually, you both could be right. It may be the bearing inside the compressor. The compressor does not make the cold air,it helps pressurize the system to get the freon from the evaporator to the condenser. The evaporator provides the cold air.If you can, open your hood and have someone start your car.Have them give it some gas and see if you can pinpoint the noise more accurately. If your compressor bearing causes it to seize up,you will probably only get a couple of miles before your belt snaps.Another slight possibility is the tensioner. It's pretty rare but stranger things have happened.I did have a compressor seizure years ago and snapped a belt though. If you can pinpoint the noise it would help to know.If you can't I would like a better description of the noise though.Good luck! What would cause AC unit new belt to break? We are trying to fix our AC unit in our 1997 Dodge Caravan by putting a new belt on. We thought we had it fix but a day or two later the belt was gone.

Check the belt alingment. Something could be in the belts pathway that is shredding your belt. Also check your compressor to make sure it is turning when the compressor clutch is engaged. If the clutch is engaging and the comprseeor is locking up it will burn the belt or snap it right off. Also check your tensioner pully and make sure it is free spinning.

03 chevy blazer stalls when air is turned on

Well I may need more information, but if something electrical loaded your engine to the point of a stall, i would expect fire soon. So most likely the fan motor is eliminated.

Now the A/C compressor, damaged and refusing to turn may be able to stall an idling engine, with todays cool serpentine belts... (In the olden days a belt would burn through and come off.)

The cheap solution to this condition is to turn off the car, and CAREFULLY unplug the compressor's electrical connection. Securely tie the wires out of the way, and test again...

You may want to consider repairing it, however, because the principle of refrigeration is a KEY COMPONENT to defrost in the winter...

Why? Because everyone knows a car air conditioner pulls moisture out, right? That crystal clear water that leaks out under air conditioned cars....
WELL, in the winter, rainy weather for example, is moisture. ....No remove moisture and no defogg.

A/C quit blowing cold air after a loud squeeling noise stopped!

Look way down on the engine front area passenger side for the compressor.
Is the belt gone?
Check the belt tensioner pulley....can you turn it?....is it seized?
If it is OK then try and turn the compressor.......and the idler part of the compressor.
If the compressor is seized.....why?
Usually lack of oil in the system,or an overcharged system.

Once you have removed the 134a gas from the A/C system before removing the compressor and before installing the new compressor make sure you add the correct amount and type of oil into the system to prevent another seized compressor after you have flushed the system to remove contaminates such as old compressor grindings......if the compressor was seized.
You will also need a new receiver/dryer once you open the system to the moisture in the air.
Do not expose the new receiver/dryer to air....install last.
Vacuum the system well before refilling with the correct amount of 134a.
At 70 to 80 degrees outside temp........a vent temp at medium fan speed of 48 to 45 degrees should be a full charge .......use this reading if you do not have a electronic scale and/or A/C machine.
DO NOT OVERFILL THE SYSTEM.

Two days after I had a new starter installed in my 02 durango, the A/C quit and there was a loud "blower" noise coming from the engine compartment. I lifted the hood and the noise was from the serpentine...

It sounds like the a/c compressor bearnig has gone bad and seized, but check the other pully bearing like the idler and tension bearing just to eleiminate the other bearing for failure. Good luck and keep me posted. If it is the compressor bearing that went bad, you can remove the a/c compressor and buy a serpintine belt that is smaller for your dodge without the a/c compressor. Make sure you know the routing of the belt without the compressor. Good luck and keep me posted.

A/C BELT KEEPS BREAKING WHEN I PRESS THE GAS, I HEAR A RATTLING NOISE. I '[VE CHANGED THE COMPRESSOR AND DYER, AND IT'S STILL DOING IT

The A/C belt just goes from the crank to the compressor. So if your snapping them then either there is a sharp edge on one of the pulleys or your compressor is seizing up.

Knocking noise from AC compressor

I would replace the compressor, if it seizes up, the belt will keep turning over the pully and burn then snap
