A DIS (Direct Ignition System) has been adopted. The DIS improves the ignition timing accuracy, reduces high-voltage loss, and enhances the overall reliability of the ignition system by eliminating the distributor. The DIS is a 2-cylinder simultaneous ignition system which ignites 2 cylinders simultaneously with one ignition coil. In the 2-cylinder simultaneous ignition system, each of the 2 spark plugs is connected to the end of the secondary winding. High voltage generated in the secondary winding is applied directly to the 2 spark plugs. In one of the spark plugs, the spark passes from the center electrode to the ground electrode and in the other plug the discharge is in the opposite direction, i.e. from ground to center electrodes.

The ECM determines ignition timing and outputs the ignition signals (IGT) for each cylinder. Based on IGT signals, the igniter controls the primary ignition signals (IGC) for all ignition coils. At the same time, the igniter also sends an ignition confirmation signal (IGF) as a fail-safe measure to the ECM.

92 dodge D150 3.9l replaced timmin gears and chain new distributor rotor wires plugs timmin is dead on but will not start

Can you take the valve cover off and turn the crank until the number one valve closes, then check the rotor on the dist ?
TDC for number one cyl is when that intake valve closes.
I assume you checked the compression and all 6 cylinders are ok ?
If you have compression and the valve timing is close, you should be able to turn the dist and get it to backfire or something if the ignition timing is the only problem.

1992 toyota celica key wont turn and alarm system going off

The steering lock may be binding the ignition lock cyl preventing the key from turning or the key may be worn out. Try turning the steering wheel back and forth while wiggling and turning the ignition key. To get the alarm to turn off without starting the car try locking and unlocking the vehicle from the passenger side door. There is a micro switch on the drivers side door lock cyl that may be bad and preventing the alarm from dis arming. This is all providing it is a toyota factory alarm sys.

Number five plug not firing

I'm assuming this is a DIS(distibutorless ignition system).If it is,the most common cause is a defective coil pack.Each coil will fire a pair of cylinders together on 4 and 6 cylinder engines(one "waste" spark,one to ignite the mixture).Try swapping the wires at the coil pack to see if the misfire follows the coil tower,or the same cylinder misfires(keep in mind that a check engine light means you will have to clear the code to get the computer to feed that cylinder fuel before you start it up again).If the other cyl on the pack now misfires(i believe 1+5 are on the same pack on a Ford engine),then the coil is bad(spark is "leaking"to ground).If the same cyl still misfires,try swapping a wire+plug from another cylinder.

Insert each wire on the proper terminal of the ignition coil. Ensure that the coil boots are fully seated and both locking tabs are engaged. The terminals are identified on the ignition coils. Install wires as shown in the illustration. The 2.3L firing order is 1-3-4-2 for both ignition coil assemblies.

Distributorless Ignition System In the distributorless ignition system (DIS), all engine timing and spark distribution is handled electronically with no moving parts. This system has fewer parts that require replacement and provides a more accurately timed spark. During basic operation, the EEC-IV determines the ignition timing required by the engine and a DIS module determines which ignition coil to fire.

Components
The distributorless ignition system (DIS) for the 2.3L twin spark plug engine consists of the following components:
  • Crankshaft timing sensor
  • DIS module
  • Two ignition coil packs
  • Spark angle portion of EEC-IV
Crankshaft Timing Sensor
The crankshaft timing sensor is a dual hall effect magnetic switch, which is actuated by the dual vane cup on the crankshaft pulley hub assembly. This sensor generates two separate signals, PIP (profile ignition pick-up) and CID (cylinder identification). The PIP signal provides base timing and RPM information, while the CID signal is used to synchronize the ignition coils. Initial timing (base timing) is set at 10 degrees BTDC and is not adjustable. Ignition Coil Packs
Two ignition coil packs are used for the 2.3L dual plug engine. The two ignition coil packs are triggered by the DIS module and are timed by the EEC-IV. Each coil pack contains two separate ignition coils for a total of four ignition coils. Each ignition coil fires two spark plugs simultaneously, one spark plug on the compression stroke and one on the exhaust stroke. The spark plug fired on the exhaust stroke uses very little of the ignition coils, stored energy, and the majority of the ignition coils, energy is used by the spark plug on the compression stroke. Since these two spark plugs are connected in series, the firing voltage of one spark plug will be negative with respect to ground, while the other will be positive with respect to ground. Refer to thePowertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual for additional information on spark plug polarity. DIS Module
The main function of the DIS module is to switch between ignition coils and trigger the coils to spark. The DIS ignition module receives the PIP and CID signals from the crankshaft timing sensor, and the SPOUT (spark out) signal from the EEC-IV module. During normal operation, PIP is passed on to the EEC-IV module and provides base timing and RPM information. The CID signal provides the DIS ignition module with the information required to switch between the coils for cylinders 1 and 4 and the coils for cylinders 2 and 3. The SPOUT signal (from the EEC-IV) contains the optimum spark timing and dwell time information. The dwell time is controlled or varied by varying the duty cycle (duration) of the SPOUT signal. This feature is called CCD (computer controlled dwell). Therefore, with the proper inputs of PIP, CID and SPOUT the DIS ignition module turns the ignition coils on and off in the proper sequence for spark control. CID is also sent to the EEC-IV micro-processor to allow for Bank to Bank fuel control. Failure Mode Effects Management
During some DIS system faults, the Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM) portion of the DIS ignition module will maintain vehicle operation. If the DIS ignition module does not receive the SPOUT input, it will automatically turn the ignition coils on and off using the PIP signal. However, this will result in fixed spark timing (ten degrees BTDC) and a fixed dwell time (no CCD). If the DIS ignition module does not receive the CID input during engine cranking, random coil synchronization will be attempted by the module. Therefore, several start attempts (cycling the ignition from OFF to START) may be required to start the engine. If the DIS module loses CID input while engine is running, the module will remember the proper firing sequence and continue to fire to maintain engine operation. Dual Plug Inhibit
Dual Plug Inhibit (DPI) is a function of the EEC-IV that is only used when the vehicle is being started at temperatures -7° C (20° F) and below. During engine cranking, the EEC-IV will only fire the spark plugs on the right hand side of the engine. When the engine has started, the EEC-IV will send a signal to the DIS module to start normal dual plug operation. Ignition Diagnostic Monitor
The Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) is a function of the DIS module. The DIS module sends information on system failures to the EEC-IV which stores the information for diagnostic self test. The IDM signal also is used to drive the vehicle instrument tachometer, and test tachometer for system

2006 dodge caravan, 6 cyl. relaced cole, sparkepugs and wires in oct. 2009. Engine is reading #2 cyl. misfire again. Why

Firts time swap spark plug & ignition coil between two different cylinders and read again if the same #2 cyl. misfires !
If #2 cyl. is OK and another cyl. misfires then spark plug or ignition coil is out of order and must be replaced.
If #2 cyl. misfires again then #2 injector must be checked !
If ignition coils & spark plugs (complete set for 6 cyl.) are replaced then you must check #2 injector !

I replaced distributor need to know where rotor button faces

Before you removed the old unit did you mark the place as to where the rotor was pointing? if so just place it in the same pos. If not then you will have to look at the timing marks on the crank bring them up to cyl. #1 is up on top dead center and place the rotor rt. before plug wire contact on the dic. cap also make sure if dis. shaft drives oil pump that the two are installed rt. so that the oil pump will pump and not burn up the motor on start up or bind and break the keyway off the pump. you can use a flash light to look down dis. mounting hole to see how the oil pump keyway is sitting if it's not in the rt. place as to how the dis. will be place when setting it back to number 1 cyl. you can use a long flat blade screw driver to turn it into place to match up with dis. shaft....also if the timing maker are hard to see and you have a helper you can simply remove spark plug from number 1 cyl. and bump engine with starter (coil unhooked up) have helped put finger over plug hole when air forces finger out your on compression or close to top dead center .

Have an 84 ford pickup 6 cyl we use to plow our driveway no spark replaced dis with new module and new coil still have no spark out of coil or dis thanks mike

Change the ballast resistor, I don't have my manual at the moment, so I can't tell you exactly where it is. Usually connected somewhere in the wire harness between the ignition switch, the coil, and the module.
