2012 Ford Fusion passenger door can not power lock, but can power unlock

When use switch or fob to lock the doors, all are working fine except passenger door, there is no sound for any action. But it can be locked manually by push the lock handle. Also, there is no issue with unlock, either with switch or fob. Do I have to replace the whole lock actuator? Thank you . Kelvin

    Principles of Operation

Power Door Locks — Without Memory

Regardless of the key position, the smart junction box (SJB) is supplied voltage at all times. When the SJB receives a signal from the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, or the door lock control switches, the SJB supplies a ground signal to the appropriate lock or unlock relay. The ground signal closes the relay which supplies voltage to the door lock actuators. The door lock actuators then actuate to a lock or unlock position.

    Inspection and Verification

    Verify the customer concern.
Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

    Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
    Binding linkage
    Misaligned door
    Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
    1 (60A)
    2 (60A)
Smart junction box (SJB) fuse 16 (15A)
    Door lock control switch
    Door latch(es)
    Luggage compartment lid latch
    Luggage compartment lid release switch
    Keyless entry keypad
    Remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter
    Circuitry
Driver door module (DDM) (if equipped)
    SJB

If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.

If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
NOTE: The vehicle communication module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.

If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
Check the VCM connection to the vehicle.
Check the scan tool connection to the VCM.
Refer to Section 418-00 , No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
Verify the ignition key is in the ON position.
Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle.
Refer to Section 418-00 to diagnose no response from the powertrain control module (PCM).
    Carry out the network test:
If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to Section 418-00 .
If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB and the DDM.
If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Smart Junction Box (SJB) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index or the Driver Door Module (DDM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index. For all other DTCs, refer to Section 419-10 .
If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart .

Read your sample scan report, I might misunderstand the “SCAN”, what I did was an engine code scan.
I guess to get those kind of scan. Have to go to a dealer and pay over $100 to get it.
Before doing that, I’d like to provide more info here.
    I did further test yesterday.
    - When the door is locked, I press unlock button, I can hear a click and then motor turning inside the door panel, and the door is unlocked.
    - when the door is unlocked, I press the lock button, I can hear a click, but nothing after. Door remained unlocked.

Seems like relays are working, the motor turns for unlock but doesn’t for unlock.

    Thanks again

It's not the actuator it could be the switch or the BCM scan the body controller for codes first. I hope this helps. Take Care.

Testimonial: "Thank you Mike. It should not be the power lock switch issue. I tried the switch at driver side and passenger side, also remote control, work for all other 3 doors except the LF door. I did BCM scan, and no code was found. The weird part is the power unlock works. Is there separate relay to control unlock and lock?"

If you can hear a click n both directions the relays are working remove the door panel then watch the actuator rod as you move the switch lock/unlock to see if the rod moves if it moves a bit but not enough to move the lock replace the actuator

Key fob not working on front passenger side but works all other doors. I changed the actuator. 2012 ford fusion. Any Ideas will help

Does your fusion have Power Door Locks - Without Memory or Power Door Locks - With Memory ? Do you know about ford SJB - smart junction box ?

Power Door Locks - Without Memory
Regardless of the key position, the smart junction box (SJB) is supplied voltage at all times. When the SJB receives a signal from the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, or the door lock control switches, the SJB supplies a ground signal to the appropriate lock or unlock relay. The ground signal closes the relay which supplies voltage to the door lock actuators. The door lock actuators then actuate to a lock or unlock position.
Power Door Locks - With Memory
Regardless of the key position, the SJB and the driver door module (DDM) are supplied voltage at all times. When the SJB receives a signal from the RKE transmitter, the keyless entry keypad, or either door lock control switch, the SJB sends a command to the DDM, through the controller area network (CAN), and a ground signal to the lock and unlock relays. When the LH door lock control switch is pressed, the DDM receives the lock or unlock signal. The DDM will send a request through the CAN network to the SJB to lock or unlock the passenger doors. The SJB then responds to the DDM request, authorizing a lock or unlock of the driver door by the DDM. The DDM then supplies voltage and ground to the driver door lock actuator based on the lock or unlock request. The ground signal in the SJB closes the relay which supplies voltage to the remaining door lock actuators. The remaining door lock actuators then actuate to a lock or unlock position determined by the relay.

  • A single or all passenger door locks are inoperative - with memory
  • Circuitry
  • Door lock actuator (part of the door latch)
  • DDM
  • SJB
  • Go To Pinpoint Test A .

How to reset anti theft

You have to have a key with the chip. Shut the hood and trunk, lock all the doors. If you have a key fob, try it first. That should disarm the security. If not lock it again and unlock the passenger side door with the key. Reach in and unlock the drivers door by the handle. If this works then your key switch on the drivers side is bad. That's why the security sets. Some times they just fall off the lock. They're made of plastic. If all that fails, your looking at a reset. That would be a locksmith or the dealer.

Power door lock switch?

Sounds like the drivers door lock switch is bad an as far as the auto start remote the contacts under the button get dirty and won't make contact, open the remote like changing the battery and you can probably get at the contact button, if it's a little carbon button they can be cleaned with a pencil eraser and then paper tower with a bit of rubbing alcohol, if it's an actual switch you can try spraying some contact cleaner into the switch. let it dry before you put the battery back in.

the wires between the door and the pillar may have cracked and create the short. its from swinging the door open and closed position in time.
