What causes a gas smell at the rear of a 1997 Ford Escort?

Motor was replaced and ever since then there is a strong gas smell at the rear of the car after it is driven. We have checked everything we can think of and can't find a cause.

Do you mean a fuel smell like petrol or actual gas like a cooker? Try a few basics. Park the car on a dry piece of ground overnight. Next morning check underneath for drips and wet spots. The fuel tank is near the back of the car so check it for leaks. Look at the bottom for dents and splits, the seam around
Next check the fuel lines from the tank all the way to the engine. A damaged, loose or wrongly fitted line can create a smell.
Is the exhaust gas a black sooty colour when you accelerate hard? This could be either a too much fuel to the engine or not enough air through the intake system. Try checking the air filter is clean. This would also show up as using more fuel than normal.

Testimonial: "It's like petrol. At first we thought it had to be a leak but there is no leak. No black soot when accelerating. There was no smell until she had motor replaced many years ago. We have been trying to find the cause since back then."

A silly one to check it the fuel fiiler cap. It should be a good air tight fit. If it isn't it will affect the fuel control system in the vehicle.
Is there any warning lights on the dash?
Have you had the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic system or an OBD2 scanner for any OBD2 codes? These codes will show if there is a faulty sensor in the vehicles electronics. This will cost you money so get prices from 4 or 5 garages as prices can be VERY different.
Does the engine run smoothly or roughly? Roughly can suggest a faulty fuel injector. Those ******* were also fitted with an 'EGR' system to reduce the emissions from the exhaust. It uses a charcoal filled canister and if it is faulty or damaged you will get a smell of fuel.
If you can comment below with the OBD2 codes I can try to explain them for you.

Strong gas smell in vehicle

Take it seriously! Gasoline as a liquid is not flammable but the vapors are! Have it serviced and diagnosed by a professional unless you are mechanically inclined. If you were mechanically inclined I would assume that your question would have been more specific. Gas vapors can come from multiple sources. The seals/gaskets on the inlet. The vapor emission filter. Broken gas line. Bad air fuel mixture. Leaking fuel rail. Damage in-line fuel filter. Etc.
