Is the security light lit in the instrument cluster ? Maybe anti-theft system problem .in which case you'll need to have it towed to VW dealer .

Are there any lights blinking on the cluster, like a theft light or maybe even a pic of a key that blinks when it starts? There are many reasons why this may be occurring. You said it starts but then stalls, how long does it stay running, 3 seconds.!? If it’s 3 sec or less you have a security/theft concern, try a second key first.

2001 vw cabrio starts then dies immediately. will not stay running and you can smell gas -- seems to be flooding

Often, when a vehicle starts and dies immediately, there is a problem with the security system. It could be a key fob with a bad battery or a system that has lost communication with the rest of the vehicle. Try using a different key to start the vehicle. If this does not work, try scanning the vehicles computer to find any fault codes. Security system issues often have to be repaired by a dealer or a shop with qualified equipment. If you smell fuel when the vehicle starts and then dies, flooding would not be the problem, but rather a lack of fuel. Look for puddles of fuel under the vehicle and make sure there are no loose connections or bad lines.

2000 vw cabrio runs normal and shuts down, takes 5 to 20 minutes to restart, engine cranks but doesnt start, changed ignition coil, pulled diagnostic codes getting short to ground codes on cylinder...

On some models, the Engine Control unit has a power supply relay. These relays some times get internal dry solder points. After driving for some time the the solder will get hot and separate. When it cools down it makes contact again. You will have to replace this relay or open it up and re- solder the solder joints. The relay is usually located on the main relay station in position 3. the relay station is located behind the right dash panel.[right hand drive vehicles]. You may need to refer to a manual for your specific model to find the exact location of the relay.

2000 Volkswagen Cabrio A/C won't stay engaged

A/C cycling on and off normally indicates freon is low. Add freon until it stays on normally.

2000 cabrio hard starting in the rain, replaced cap and wires, about 2 years ago, I heard it might be ignition coil problem, they said it was common

Dodge trucks never used to work in the rain.
Spray the ignition with WD40. It chases out the water and the problem will go away.

How to change a burned head light on a 2000 vw cabrio?

Changing headlights on VW Cabrio I just changed the headlights on my roommate's 2002 Cabrio, but I followed the instructions given for a 2001. What you have to do is: 1. Move the metal wire holding the black cover to the side and remove the black cover. 2. Remove the power cord from the bulb itself and push to the side. 3. You will see a pin holding the headlight in. Squeeze the pin (you want to squeeze closer to the top of the pin, which is the closed end; don't squeeze the open ends because all you will do is get irritated and hurt your fingers), then push it back and down. What this will do is move the pin away and then out from those little metal tabs that its going through. One side will pop out, then the other. When you get it out, the pin should be standing up, with the closed end pointing up. You can then remove the bulb and replace. Popping the pin back in is a heck of a lot easier than getting it out! I was able to remove the cover, but I got totally stumped on the pin. I hope this helps you out, it may be a little confusing but its kind of difficult to describe. Maybe this will at least point you in the right direction!

Starts and dies

I do believe that you have to reprogram the key, check your local dealer; that is the simple solution. The same problem can be caused by the ignition coil being bad.
Good luck

Unable to start my 2001 cabrio vw. I have a fairly new battery. Lights work. When I turn the key, there's nothing not a crank, nothing.

I would look to see if the anti-theft light is on next to the door lock. A 95 cabrio did this when I was test driving it. All we did was get out of the vehicle and manual lock and unlock the car, then it went away. This could definitely be more complicated than this, but always worth a try.
