The only way to know for sure is buy a manual gauge and test it. Hook up the hose with the treaded makes end to the block. Usually located above the oil filter if your under the car. There should be a plug and wire attached to it, that your oil pressure switch. Take that off and attach the manual gauge to it. Turn your car on and let it idle, for like 15mins. Depending on how cold it is outside, and your oil viscosity of your oil, like how thick your oil is. 5w20 normal and 10w30 is thick. You want your oil to warm up so you can get a proper reading, look in car manual for oil pressure specifications on the reading. For example my 95 honda civic says at idle it should read 10psi and 3000 rpms on your tachometer in your the gauge should read 50psi. If all is good it might the gauge in your car. Good luck.
Im sure its the sender/switch AS ALEX SAID. very common one those jeeps
You may have a bad oil pressure switch
but check the level of the oil and if it looks clogy change it and see what happens

Might be that the oil pressure switch is going out. Unless this has been happening for a while now.

change your oil,it could be too thin, see if that fixes it

if you know for certain that the sending unit is correct and the guage is accurate, then yiu may have big problems.....while the engine is running open the oil filler hole.. is everything wet with oil? or does it look dry or just a little lubed? you can allways install an aftermarket oil pressure guage(crappy tire) if you get the same results with that then you may have a week oil pump....worst case scenerio... need an engine rebuild as the moter may have wear issues.does the pressure slowly drop as the motor warms up? at idle ? does it jump up when you step on the gas?
SOURCE: 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Malfunction light came on. What is the cause?
You can do one of three things.1. buy a scan tool 2. go to a dealer and pay to have the codes read and diagnosed 3. go to your local parts chain to have it read for free. (call first to verify). The code will tell you what system is malfunctioning and what the malfunction is. The parts store option is my choice, because you can also get the part to fix it if needed and you are not out the $ for diagnostics, nor did you need an appt to get it in.

if the gauge starts a 0 - goes to 1/2 , than full - sounds like gauge is OK - seems to me like the sending unit is bad - you could try removing the sender and trying to clean out the port with "brake clean", letting it dry than re-installing it. the pressure switch is still the least expensive place to start
