What do you want to check? If there is an issue with one rocker then the covers should be taken off and the Gaps checked with the engine off and rotated with a wrench to the correct position. The old mechanic trick To check which one has the issue you can put a thin wooden Schrank, stick or metal bar to the rocker cover housing and put the other end to the groove in your neck behind your ear lobe this will transmit the sound through your ear bone, move the bar to each rocker position on the housings. The one or ones that are the loudest are most likely the ones that need adjusting or replacement.

SOURCE: Alternator may be overcharging?

Well, 18 volts is an issue. And can cook your battery. Proper voltage range is 13.6 to 14.2 volts
The lower the voltage, the higher the amperage so 18 volts is doing nothing as far as charging but is doing alot towards ruining the battery. Have both checked. The battery could have wasted the alternator. good luck. I bet your battery needs lots of water. If so, it may already be trash.

SOURCE: what is the torque of the rocker arms on alero 2003 3400 engine

14 ft/lbs first pass on all then an additional 30 degrees for all on final pass ..by the way 1 bolt flat to the next bolt flat is 60 degrees so all nuts get half a bolt flat final torque if ya wanna throw caution to the wind torque it to 16 ft lbs and be done with it. lol these specs are from gm ok. good luck and ps the intake pushrods are shorter than the exhaust pushrods and there is no clearance if you get them in wrong an apprentice found this out 3 years ago and a lot of people saw what happens lol..good luck

SOURCE: rocker arm adjustments 5.7 vortec

as long as the oil system was primed and the lifters are full tighten each rocker down until it is snug enough that you can't move it with your fingers.put the valve covers back on and run the motor for a couple minutes. then run the motor with one of the valve covers off at a time. it can be a little messy but this is the best way. as the motor is running loosen each rocker nut until you hear chatter then tighten it back down until it stops plus one quarter turn. this is the best way I know to make sure they are just right.

1996 Chevrolet C1500 Pickup 5.7L V8 what cause the valves to make a noise when the engine started up?

classic HLA problems see now for 80 years if V6/8 engines up.
they are gunked up in side.
or oil pressure is too low. (pump screen clogged)
do not read post here about valve lash, this engine has HLA
we can/t guess of other owners play around with lifters and rockers.
did it all wrong,
but here they are HLA roller , hyd. lash adjusters
as on AUTOMATIC LAST AT ZERO LIFERS
IF OIL PRESSURE TO THEM FAILS THEY FAIL.
IF PATH OF OIL FAILS TO THEM THEY FAIL
AND IF THEY ARE GUNKED UP THEY FAIL
OIL COME THE GALLERY AND LANDS AT THE TINY ONLY SEEN
BELOW WITH A RED ARROW.
most folks just put in a new set and cross fingers.

2005 Chevrolet Malibu 3.5. Engine is making a slapping noise.

Question edited for clarity.

If the rocker arm was broken, it wouldn't run. The most likely cause is a worn timing chain.

Engine has squeasky noise consistant with rocker timing

Not sure what rocker timing is but if you are talking about a rocker arm tapping then you will need to remove the rocker arm cover and adjust the lifter that is making the noise.

Ticking noise while in drive getting worse, been told that noise coming from bell housing?

Valve Adjustment

Print
The 4.2L and 5.3L engines do not require a periodic valve lash adjustment.
The 4.3L engines are equipped with screw-in rocker arm studs with positive stop shoulders. Because the shoulders that allow the rocker arms to be tightened into proper position, no adjustments are necessary or possible. If a valvetrain problem is suspected, check that the rocker arm nuts are tightened to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). When valve lash falls out of specification (valve tap is heard), replace the rocker arm, pushrod and hydraulic lifter on the offending cylinder.

It could be that the valve clearances need doing, if that doesn't fix it then put a oil pressure guage on it and check the pressure,

Motor knock sounds like rocker arms or lifters?

If your engine is knocking the sound with be at the bottom of your oil pan but if you have lifter or rocker arm problems the sound will be at the top of your engine. One other thing you said your car has 315k it might be time to change your oil pump.

1996 vortec 5.7. how do I adjust rocker arms when the motor is cold?

these are adjusted the same way 5.7 litre motors have been adjusted since GM started making this size of motor. with every thing in place tighten rocker nuts down until about 1/16" threads is protruding above nut. once the car starts allow the engine pressure to build and oil is squirting around rockers. then with engine running tighten down rockers that are noisy until the noise has just gone. then back off nut until it starts to clatter then tighten 3/4 of a turn. repeat to all the other rockers and your done.

Loud rattle noise in Camshaft

First, your engine has rocker arms, if you have a 4 cylinder you have 8 rocker arms, and if it is a 6 cylinder you have 12 rocker arms. Now if it is indeed a rocker arm making the noise, the cause is most likely a bad lifter or a worn cam shaft.

64 Chevy pickup, rebuild engine, tapping noise in

Remove the valve cover and rotate the engine and check to see if all the valves are opening the same amount. If not, you have either a bad lifter, bent pushrod, or cam going flat. Check your valve lash with the valves closed. You should be at 0 lash at all of the rocker arms.
