What are some common causes for hard shifting

Assuming that you have automatic transmission, the single most common cause is a lack of maintenance.

Check the transmission fluid level as detailed in your owners' handbook. If it's anything other than a bright cherry red or smells rancid then drain and refill with new fluid. If the colour and smell are fine then just top it up to the correct level. Note that on most auto transmission dipsticks, there are two level marked: one is the level for a cold engine, the other is for when the car has been driven and fully warmed up.

My 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe shifts really hard from 2nd to 3rd, almost as though the transmission slips

If there is no check engine light on - check the transmission fluid by pulling out the dip stick (check the level and smell the fluid if it smells burnt, there is an internal problem with the transmission) if all this is ok then the problem may be one of the speed sensos or (pulse generators)

Where do I find the transmission fluid drain plug and filter to replace on 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Some vehicles had filters and some didn't. If you have a filter it will be inside the transmission pan, and in that case there won't be a drain plug. You just take the pan off and try to get as little on you as possible when all the fluid comes out. MUCH easier if you have a lift.

If you don't have a pan then the drain plug is on the bottom. Manual transmissions don't have a pan, but sometimes the automatics didn't either.

Fluid: Hyundai Manual Transmission fluid if it's a 5 speed, and Hyundai ATF or Mitsubishi Triple Diamond ATF only if it's an automatic. Dexron and generic ATF does not fair well in these transmissions.

Call a dealership parts department with the VIN number and see if there is a filter kit available for your vehicle if it has an automatic transmission.

Transmission will not shift all of a sudden On my 2004 Santa Fe

Time to go to a transmission shop. You could try a complete tranny flush at sears first and have the filter changed.

Manual transmission at times has trouble shifting

2003 hyundai, should only have hyundai approved fluids in both the cooling system and transmission. If you take your vehicle to a transmission shop other that hyundai let them now there is a special fluid that goes back into the either radiator or transmission. Regular transmission fluids viscosity is to thick and will make shifting very hard. My Mazda has the same issues Wrong fluids go back into the transmission when I have had work done to it making the shifter hard to shift in cold weather. A Worn clutch can have the same effect.
