Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

The shop I take my car to was going to put a waterpump & timing tensioner in my car, but they said that all the antifreeze leaked out and that the motor is shot so no sence in doing that! But I went their today to check the car out. I added antifreeze & water mix 50/50 and all that the car took was enough to fill the reservoir half full for the normal cold fill. I ran the car it seemed fine to me and I checked the oil and it was ok too. Is it possible that the car didn't leak as much as they said and that the motor is ok?

As long as the car wasn't cooked overheated to the point that it warped the heads . Have the radiator pressure tested see where your leak is first of all . If it's only coming from water pump then by all means change water pump . Also might want to find a new shop get another mechanic to check it out see what they have to say. Alot of back alley shops may seem cheaper but in the long run may bleed you for money on what you don't need .

Check the over flow reservoir. If it has been filling up athen that is probably what you've been replacing. It sounds like the thermostat. I would change that first and see if that fixes it. It is located at the frontof the engine. You will have to take off the the hose that comes from the bottom of the radiator to the front of the engine at the thermostat housing. Take the hose off at the housing. Remove the three bolts that hold the housing and reveal the thermostat. You can eae the thermostat out put the gasket back in and put everything back together to see if this solves your problem. If it does then goto autozone, advance, O'reilly's or one of your local car parts dealer and get a new thermostat and replace it.

Check all around the intake manifold gasket for evidence of antifreeze. Also check your oil for evidence of coolant. The Dexcool antifreeze used in GM engines can cause the intake gaskets to deteriorate causing coolant leakage. Very difficult to detect.

chances are you blew your headgasket, an when the antifreeze flows through the internals of the engine it leaks into the cylinders an burns up on the combustion stroke, unfortunatly this is most the time a costly fix

Squeaking noise and antifreeze leaking....waterpump replcement perhaps?

With the engine turned off, put your finger up behind under the pump pulley. if you find antifreeze there likely the pump seal has failed. Otherwise, locate the leak source and make whatever repair is necessary. You will get a noise any time water or coolant gets on the drive belt. Best to look before going through a pump replacement to find later you have a pin hole in the radiator on a hose!!!

My 2003 monte carlo ss is leaking antifreeze. i noticed it is leaking from behind the belt tensioner out of a piece which is black in color and has a 90 degree angle on it.

There are two plastic elbows that go from the intake and the waterpump to the tensioner bracket for the heater hoses. They need replaced.

This is called a weep hole and it indicates the rubber seal is now leaking antifreeze onto the waterpump bearing and it's only a matter of time before the waterpump falls change the waterpump.

A repair shop said it was the waterpump and

You need to look it over and find the source of the leak.
Coolant loss will cause an overheat and every time that happens you risk an expensive job including total engine loss. Obvilousy no one here can see your engine and tell you where the leak is. If you don't do your own work, have the shop that did the work check it over. Normally shops give at least a 90 day guarantee on their work and therefore if the pump is faulty or there was a problem with the install, they should correct it.

Dodge 318 overheating.

HI. It could possibly be the the thermostat is stuck shut. If thats the case when the vehicle warms up it will probably overheat all the time. The best way to tell is buy a new one and change it. They are usualy around $10.00 at any autoparts store. If you change it and it still overheats, it could be the waterpump.
