2001 Pontiac Montana starts to sputter and backfire when I'm accelerating on the highway after driving for maybe 10 minutes or so. If I keep accelerating or try to accelerate it would just die the battery light comes on but if I let off the gas it's okay and if I barely accelerate it might be okay to get off on the next exit but if I just try to go the speed limit it's no bueno

Hello. It seems your car has restricted exhaust; can't breathe. The catalytic converter/clogged muffler is, more and likely, to blame. Keep me informed; if you want to.

SOURCE: Battery light on dash

The battery light is an indication of some kind of problem with the alternator, most likely a diode problem in the rectifier bridge, this changes AC current to DC current to supply power to the car and charge the battery.

The cruise problem is most likely the cruise control module is failing.

SOURCE: ENGINE SPUTTER AND DIES ON ACCELERATION

check your fuel filter, take an air compressor and blow air through the "in" end if no or little air is coming through then just replace the filter, if fuel filter is ok then try a fuel additive to clean your injectors which are a very common problem when the engine gets gunky build up on them

Check your TPS Throttle positioning sensor. Sounds like it has a dead spot in it or it is failing. May also be a wiring harness issue or loose connection at TPS too! If its intermittent then it will soon go out completely. It should be located on your fuel pedal. Remove it and check it with an ohm meter. Check resistance all the way thru from 0-100 percent. When it is not working it should do nothing and show no resistance. When it is working the resistance value will increase and or decrease as you turn the sensor.

SOURCE: My 2001 Nissan Xterra sputtered

Sounds like you have water in the gas. Are you in cold country? The whole country is right now. Anyway, if that is the problem, It could have easily come from the gas station, there tanks condensate too, Get a can of dry gas. If that is not it, get the code checker on there and see what it says, could be an o2 sensor, something in the air horn sensor. a bunch of things most people don't even know exist. hope this helps.

My dads 2007 Pontiac Montana just started sputtering while accelerateing what could be the problem

It could be several things. Could be fuel related, ignition related, or catalytic converter/s. Take it to a parts store and have the codes read. They do it for free. Codes help pin point the problem.

if you don't have a gas cap on the car or if it is on too loosely then that is a possibility. Only other thing I could think of would be water in your fuel. You may try a bottle of "heat" (I think that is how you spell it) at your local auto parts store and chunk it in the gas can. if there were any problems with water that should be the cure.
