With the 4.7L V8, you have an electronically controlled transmission, with a separate transmission control module (TCM). I'll second Simon's suggestion to take it to a professional. Automatic transmissions can be a can of worms, but electronically controlled transmissions are even more complicated if you don't have the proper tools to diagnose.

To be honest if your not familiar with transmissions, (especially automatics), your safest method is to pay a specialist to look at it. Transmissions are a seriously evil can of worms if you don't know what your doing!
Does it feel like it's dropping into gear and trying or is it just 'dead'? This could be anything from a faulty transmission sensor to something much more serious.
Did you change the fluid and filter in the transmission? That can go bad just like engine oil does.

If you removed the radiator, the transmission cooler lines on the bottom would be the first place to check. Wouldn't take much to get a kink in the line, and a possible cause for your shifting problems. Best of luck to you.

S-10 Sometimes Starts, Mechanic Can't Find Problem

Yep, heres one. Start with pulling the crank fuse. The fuse is probably good, but you have a corrosion/contact issue. Putting it back will solve this issue. I would do all of them, as one will do it, more are sure to follow. Also do they relays. Next would be checking wires. Most times wires will loose connection at the plug, sometimes they will break right at the plug.

My 96 Grand Charokee sat for 3 years. I can't get it to start.

What about the fuel, was it drained and the system flushed. Gas turns to goop after this long and will barely burn.

I have a 1996 Saturn Sl2. It ran out of gas one day and sat on the side of the road for a few days. Well, I finally got it towed home, and changed the fuel filter. The fuel pump is good. But, it is smoking...

Here are your possible problems. 1)Leaking injectors(Rare), Leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator(Common) Bad Engine Temp Sensor. (Common), Here is what i would check. Find the Regulator and pull off vacuum line, (located on fuel rail near injectors) check if there is fuel present in line. If yes replace regulator. Check temp sender with a scanner your looking for a reading in the (-) or below 140deg F, when car is first started and smoke present if yes replace engine temp sender for computer(not sender for guage!) IF both those pass inspection replace injectors(Not common problem)

The break peddle goes to floor before the car stops

Hello,

If you had your breaks done recently take it back and tell them to bleed your brakes. Here some issues I have found before:

1 Air in the brake lines (Fix this by pumping the breaks till they get hard and the other person releaves the pressure by turning the bleed valve on the caliper until the fluid is not milky and repeat to all wheels)
2 Master cylinder is broken (R/R)
3 The cylinder on one or both of the calipers is stuck (R/R)
4 I even had a bad wheel bearing cause this when turning left only (who would have guessed) of course a very short time later I was being towed.

Yesterday leaving work a radiator line broke. I fixed the line refilled the fluids and started to complete the drive home. Not even three miles down the road my truck was pegged out of the thermostat...

check for blown head gasket. Open radiator cap, start engien and look for bubbles coming up the radiator. If exhaust gas is coming out there, your head gasket is blown. Let me know if you have more questions.

Car sat 3 years, tried to start. Had to replace fuel filter, still not getting fuel.

Did you check to make sure fuel is getting as far as the filter? Detach the fuel line at the filter and have someone crank the engine. If fuel doesn't get to the end of the line you've got a clog somewhere else or there's a break in the fuel line.
