The button seems to be missing something on top. the button does not go down. I'm looking for the missing piece but cannot find one anywhere. Can you help me here? I've tried online but all companies do not know what I'm talking about.

When you press the release button it will send a ground to a relay which in then sends power to the control switch which releases the lock more or less depending on what you are trying to release.

Shifter button not working on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee

In most cases the shifter button is controlled by a solenoid activated by a switch on the brake pedal when the pedal is depressed. If the button will not release there may be a problem with the brake pedal switch ( Do the brake lights work when the pedal is pushed? ) the shifter release solenoid or wiring. There may be an override to release the button somewhere near the shifter. Check owners manual to see if equipped with safety release button
