Question about Pontiac Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

06 pontiac torrent. About once a month, randomly, my steering wheel will start to vigorously shake and i can hear a loud roaring sound come from my front end, think semi tire loudness. Theres been 3 times this has happened in about a 4 month period. 2 of the times i was going downhill and it started when i hit 30 mph, i slowed way down.. Almost to a stop and when i sped back up it stopped. The most recent was today leaving town, got up around 30mph again when it started doing it but i didnt have anywhere to pull off so i rode it out... After about a half mile it quit automatically and rode fine. I can always tell when its going to happen cause i can feel it in my gas pedal getting rougher to push and the noise starts to develop. Any idea on where to start?

Note: i shook the wheels and theres no movement in thise so wheel bearing seem fine. Bushings all visually look okay and tires got replaced about 6 months ago so its not a wear in those.

SOURCE: loud humming noise from front end of Durango 4 x 4

You have a hub/wheel bearing going out. You need to jack up the vehicle on each side. Grab the top and bottom of the wheel and try to move it in/out at the top and bottom. If this does not work then roll the wheel as fast as you can and see if you can hear which one it is. Good Luck.

SOURCE: Loud "tire or wheel" roar on the highway

I certainly would take it back to the shop that performed the brake job and have them investigate. If it was not making the noise prior to the repair there is a good chance the noise is involved with the brakes. A possible loose brake pad, a sticking caliper(caliper pins may need to be lubed) or any number of things could be wrong.

SOURCE: steering wheel violently shakes.

that is usually caused by bad engine mount this condition usually changes the distance of the cv joint and the differential which cause the cv joint to shake. also check your ball joints.

Why does it start to shake at around 50 MPH only when the accelerator is pressed?

Do you notice any check engine lights coming on the dash when this happens, also has the vehicle had any recent repairs or any reason why this may be happening? Any input from you is helpful. I will check my resources and see what we can find out. Please advise

At 100kph the wheel will start to wiggle vigorously.the car has undergone wheel alignment and wheel balancing.what shall we do next?

If it starts shaking after 100kph then its either the power steering pump or the steering box is going bad. Do you hear wizzing noises when you turn the wheel right and left (similar to a turbo boost sound)? Have you recently notices problems with steering like being delayed?

The only other thing that would cause something like that would be if the tires are worn badly on places. If this was the problem, it would not really shake the wheel - but when the tires hit a bump or notch in the road it would allow them to go in that direction easier then usual. So it would seem like something was grabbing the wheel or changing the course while driving.

If you steering box is going bad, you will notice other things like a delay from when the wheels start to respond after you have turned your steering wheel in a certain direction. if your turning right and there seems to be a delay as to when your wheels begin to turn then you need to have the box checked.

After checking the box if that is not the problem, try adding power steering fluid and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't then have the power steering pump checked.

I have a 2006 pontiac pursuit (g5) and when you turn the steering wheel past center from either direction the steering wheel makes a clicking sound that is loud enough to hear any where in the car. It does...

iF YOUR PONTIAC HAS ELECTRIC OR ELECTRIC ASSIST STEERING, THEN IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE MISSING TEETH/DAMAGED GEAR INSIDE THE ELECTRICAL STEERING ASSEMBLY. THIS WOULD CAUSE THE NOISE AND THE OFF CENTER STEERING CONCERN.
