I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer Premier, AWD, 4.6L. The transmission is now bad and I am needing to figure out my next best action. Its a little involved. This truck was modified by the previous owner. He thought that the answer to the problem he was having was to remove the front drive system (drive shaft, axles, etc. Did not remove the transfer box. This made it a 2WD instead of AWD. The transmission for both the two wheel drive and 4 wheel drive Mountaineer are the same. Basically the only difference is the transfer case and subsequent front drive system. What would be involved in fully converting to 2WD? Can I just remove the transfer case, rear drive shaft and replace the driveshaft with one from a 2WD? Am I correct that a transmission from either a 2WD or AWD will work as is? Any computer issues?

There was thought to be a problem with the front diff - so everything related to the front drive system was removed. The problem was a bad hub.

As it is now, the transfer case and everything for the rear drive is intact.

Then the transmission had jerking issues, delayed reverse with a rough shift, 2nd gear. Threw a code for solenoid pack. Pulled it, cleaned it, tested ok, put back in. Still issues. Cant afford to rebuild trans or buy parts to make front drive.

Will need to check on trans hook up for the correct motor and their mounts --thats the fab part the bigger headache is the flashing your vehicle from awd to the new trans and the elimination of the awd system to a 2wd system

    Any insight on that?

SOURCE: Worn out transfer case (AWD 5.0) Can I remove case

no you have to most likely replace output shaft in trans and for sure the tail shaft housing of the transmission it would be easier to replace transfer case not sure if the cheapest

SOURCE: Can I Drive my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer all wheel drive 5.0 liter SUV. without the front drive shaft, can I remove it and still drive it for a week or could this damage the transfer case

it is all wheel drive so realistically the answer is ---no
However if you have a center diff lock switch to make it 4wd then --yes -- you can as that will lock up the diff in the transfer case
Will it damage the transfer case ---no--as there is no front drive shaft( you took it out) to cause a torque wind up problem in the drive train
AS to the park selection -- that is a physical connection of a pall in a ring gear in the transmission and the park action would be the same as in a 2wd vehicle
remember that is a requirement by law to engage the park brake and not to rely on the park selection of the transmission

I have a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer Premier 4.6L. When the AWD kicks in it pulls hard to the right and a grinding noise from the front diff. The AWD will continue to kick in every time I step on the gas no...

Have you serviced the front differential? If you check your manual, you'll see it needs to be serviced at somewhere around 30K mi intervals similar to the transmission. Typically changing of the fluid is done but if left unchecked provides the potential for early failure.

Grinding noises from the front dif are NOT a good sign - and may indicate the need for an expensive repair / replacement. Fluids may have leaked out completely or are too low and caused overheating, etc.

I would bring it to a trusted mechanic ASAP to see if damage can be minimized!

My cruise control works sometimes but not always

I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer AWD Premier V6 4.0L and the fix was simple for me. My problem was the cruise control working off and on randomly. Part number SW-6349 3L3Z-9F924-AB. I put this on myself and it worked like a charm.

I need a new transmission in my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer V8 AWD, how much should I expect to spend?

Replacing a transmission can run $1,800-$3,500
I'm thinking closer to $2800 for you because it is a more sophisticated AWD model, perhaps more. Hope that is informative enough for you.

Please rate me, thanks!
