On a 1905 Chevy 5.7 liter truck is the check engine light supposed to come on when you disconnect the timing connector( tan & black wire)? I changed the ignition module and pickup in the distributor now when I disconnect set timing wire light comes on where it never did before

I have a 95 toyota corolla sedan. Put in new rebuilt engine, fired it up, it ran for 5 seconds, then quit...now i have no spark? what is it? I changed the igniter, still no spark

there is a large evaporative leak. keep away form ottozoo, they dont have the brain power to actually diagnose a light bulb., their job is to sell parts., if they sell you the wrong parts tough.Take it to a qualified repair shop that does a lot of GM work or the dealer.

4.2L 6-Cylinder

1. Set parking brake. Shift automatic transmission to Park or manual transmission to Neutral. With A/C off, start engine and attain normal operating temperature.

2. With ignition OFF, connect an ignition timing light and a calibrated, expanded-scale tachometer.

3. Disconnect 4 " and 10 " Hg (CEC System) vacuum switch assembly wire connector (located at top of valve cover). Disconnect and plug distributor vacuum advance hose.

4. Start engine, increase engine speed to 1600 RPM and check ignition timing. Adjust timing to specification listed on Emission Control Information label (if necessary). Tighten distributor hold-down clamp and recheck ignition timing.

5. Turn engine off and remove timing light and tachometer. Connect No. 1 spark plug lead, if disconnected. Unplug and connect distributor vacuum advance hose. Connect vacuum switch assembly wire connector.

NOTE: If timing light has an adjustable advance control feature, turn control to OFF position.

Timing is set per the emissions tag under hood.

Hi, I have pasted the procedure below. Your spec is 0 degrees (right at TDC).


CHECKING AND ADJUSTMENT

HEI Systems

  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Stop the engine and connect the timing light to the No. 1 (left front) spark plug wire, at the plug or at the distributor cap. You can also use the No. 6 wire, if it is more convenient. Numbering is illustrated in this section.

Do not pierce the plug wire insulation with HEI; it will cause a miss. The best method is an inductive pickup timing light.
  1. Clean off the timing marks and mark the pulley or damper notch and timing scale with white chalk.
  2. Disconnect and plug the vacuum line at the distributor on models with a carburetor. This is done to prevent any distributor vacuum advance. On fuel injected models, disengage the timing connector which comes out of the harness conduit next to the distributor, this will put the system in the bypass mode. Check the underhood emission sticker for any other hoses or wires which may need to be disconnected.
  3. Start the engine and adjust the idle speed to that specified on the Underhood Emissions label. With automatic transmission, set the specified idle speed in Park. It will be too high, since it is normally (in most cases) adjusted in Drive. You can disconnect the idle solenoid, if any, to get the speed down. Otherwise, adjust the idle speed screw.

The tachometer connects to the TACH terminal on the distributor and to a ground on models with a carburetor. On models with fuel injection, the tachometer connects to the TACH terminal on the ignition coil. Some tachometers must connect to the TACH terminal and to the positive battery terminal. Some tachometers won't work with HEI.


WARNING Never ground the HEI TACH terminal; serious system damage will result.

  1. Aim the timing light at the pointer marks. Be careful not to touch the fan, because it may appear to be standing still. If the pulley or damper notch isn't aligned with the proper timing mark (see the Underhood Emissions label), the timing will have to be adjusted.

TDC or Top Dead Center corresponds to 0°B, or BTDC, or Before Top Dead Center may be shown as BEFORE. A, or ATDC, or After Top Dead Center may be shown as AFTER.
  1. Loosen the distributor base clamp locknut. You can buy trick wrenches which make this task a lot easier.
  2. Turn the distributor slowly to adjust the timing, holding it by the body and not the cap. Turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation to ******, and against the direction of rotation to advance.
  3. Tighten the locknut. Check the timing again, in case the distributor moved slightly as you tightened it.
  4. Reinstall the distributor vacuum line or the timing connector. Correct the idle speed.
  5. Stop the engine and disconnect the timing light.

Timing a 92 chevy s10

The tan colored wire with a black stripe is located either breaking out of the wire harness near the distributor, or under the carpet on the passenger side floor, (look up towards the top right hand corner, and you might also have to remove the kick panel to see it if it got stuffed behind the kick panel).

It is a Tan colored wire with a Black stripe, and it will usually have a unique black connector.

You will know it is the right wire because when it is dis-connected at the connector the idle and timing will change, and the check-engine light will come on.

Set the timing where you want it to be, then turn off the ignition and re-connect the wire to the electronic timing control. Re-start the vehicle and the check-engine light should go out, that is of course if it was not already on before because of another problem.

You can re-set the check-engine light by dis-connecting the battery ground for three minutes.

I am having trouble setting the timing on a 262(4.3l)chevy vortec engine 1995

You have to put the Ignition Control (IC) system in the bypass mode by disconnecting the "set timing" connector. This is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black striped lead. The location of the "set timing" connector with a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controller is near the PCM connectors in the passenger compartment. Unplug connector (tan/black stripe) start engine set timing to 0 TDC, TURN OFF ENGINE, re-connect timing connector

Were is the plug to disconnect the computer from changing the timing on a 94 chevy pickup with 350?

Disconnect SET TIMING connector: The location of the set timing connector is inside the cab where the heater box and the carpet meet on the passenger side floor. Pull carpet back to expose the single wire and connectors on the outside of the control module harness. The wire colors are tan with a black stripe. DO NOT disconnect 4 wire connector at distributor.

Where can i get the specs for ignition timing on a 1989 GMC K1500 Pickup

Note: The Timing Connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributer. It is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead.
Note: Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure. PROCEDURE:
Set timing under the following conditions:
  • Normal operating temperature.
  • Air cleaner installed.
  • A/C "OFF".
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in the harness close to the distributor. DO NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.
  • Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor.
Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 00(TDC)
  • Tighten hold down and recheck the timing.
  • Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector.
  • Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source.

93 chevy 1500 v6 keeps dying out.

Connect a voltmeter set on ac volts to the pickup coil wires (disconnected from the module) and crank the engine.

2. The pick-up coil output should be more than 0.7v AC. If not, replace the pick up coil and distributor shaft.

3. Visually inspect the condition of the magnet on top of the distributor shaft to be in good condition. If not, replace the distributor

1. Disconnect the set timing connector or ground the Tan/Black bypass wire.

2. The check engine light should come on and code 42 should set.

3. If the engine stops stalling, disconnect the pick up coil connector at the Ignition Control Module (ICM).

4. Check acv output from the pick up coil while cranking the engine at a normal cranking speed.

5. If output is less than 700 mv replace the distributor shaft with a new one.

I need to know the timing specs for a 1994 Chevy 4.3 V6 Engine.

Following the label under the hood. Put in base timing mode by unplugging a wire connector, it usually tells you where it is. This will turn on the check engine light to tell you you're in base timing mode and takes the ECM out of the loop. Should be a single wire tan in color with a black stripe and black connector. If you not sure where the connector is, it's in the passenger compartment behind the carpet, and blower heater. Just follow along the wire harness from the ECM. Remeber a single wire tan in color with a black stripe and black connector. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted if you have any other questions. Ignition Timing

How to check and adjust the timing
Disconnect the tan/black wire EST (electronic spark timing) by-pass connector located near the heater housing in the engine compartment on the S/T series, or near the distributor on all other V-6 models. Do not disconnect the four- (4) wire connector at distributor. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 spark plug wire. Check timing and adjust to "0" degrees BTDC. With the engine off, reconnect the EST by-pass connector and clear the ECM trouble codes by disconnecting the battery.
