Your in limp mode will need it scanned to find out problem but check oil level --and transmission level --the code can be checked against a possible recall
Run out if gas?
Likely the engine has lost the crank or cam position sensor and batteries are low. No engine, no charge on batteries, no go.
You need to know what codes are to determine what the root problem.
Thank you so very much!!!
You should check if there any recalls available for your model:https://www.recallslist.com/ford/fusion/ - if you see any recall, you can ask your dealer to solve the problem free of charge.

it can be couple of thing Try a fuel injector cleaner or new fuel injectors.it can be vacuum leak. Engines need a vacuum
to run especially at idle which is when your car dies. It could be a stuck
EGR.
If the check engine light comes on it will store a code so take it to a
shop and pay them to read the codes. This may give you a starting point.

I had a 2002 model 1.4 Fiesta, same problem Engine management light or
ECA, electronic accelaration Control (EAC), it needs a ford dealer to do
a computer diagnostic, most likely that it will need replaced.
Mt friend who is a mechanic for ford said that it was a common factory
fault and is very common in 1.4 zetec /duratec petrol models.
I now have a 2007 Fusion and was quick to see if this problem had been sorted on this model, and it has!!
Hope this helps!!

Try removing the battery for half an hour or so and then reconnecting (check you have all your radio codes etc before you do this).

Man i have this problem too! Your engines overheating. It says, High Motor Temperature too right? Its fucked up how it just stops no matter where you are. Hectic Downtown, Highways, Middle of Access roads. Just to name a few of my experiences this past week. I hate Ford for that.
You should check your coolant if you haven't had it changed. Check if the fans are running. Do you have a leak? Check the two coolant resevoirs under the hood on the bottom left. The front one is for the engine and radiator cooling, the back resevoir is for the Motor Electronics cooling. If there's fluid in there, try changin it with new coolant, 50/50 mix for both resevoirs. Don't use any Life extending additives. Make sure the fluid you get is **** yellow not orange. Once you've had that changed, and it still does it, could be a stuck thermostat.
Haven't fixed mine yet. Good luck with yours!
