Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Possible causes and fixes for speedometer jumping to 70 kph as soon as start moving ? It stays there regardless of speed. Coming down from punching dash little each punch but resumes same behavior.

1994 Pontiac Sunbird. 190,000 kms. Had been working fine. Sat for couple weeks in temps bouncing from 5c day to -9c night. Morning I went out to go somewhere the front tires of it's fwd were in small ruts of ice from frozen water maybe 1-2" deep. They spun in ice rut so bit more gas got it moving back out. Nothing severe rpm wise. Done similar in past when bit of wet snow and ice there with no problems from that in past. It slowly moves up to 70kph and stays there as soon as I start moving forward even when I'm only at 30 kph. It doesn't vibrate, just stays there whether I speed up to 70 or slow down or hit bumps. But punching dash or on or under steering colum makes it drop about 10 with each punch. Have to do this when stopped to get it back to 0. But as soon as start moving again it does same. Punching it while moving gets the small drops but it slowly goes back up to 70 even though doing only 50-60 kph. It's like it's on a higher gear of it's own.

Id say your wheel speed sensors need to be checked or scanned

Testimonial: "if it wheel sensors would punching dash bring it down ? if stopped, each punch brings it down 10 kph from 70 kph where it stays when stopped. Punching well moving 50 kph brings it down in same 10 kph steps but it slowly goes back to 70. Makes me wonder if something in dash gauge ? I dunno. So it's not old style cable, but electric wires feeding speedo and other things re speed ? Automatic tranny doing ok. No warning lights. Might disconnecting battery possibly reset something ?"

possible maybe but gm did have many cluster problems in the past and some places rebuild those clusters.

Looks like the nozzles have got some deposition on it. Spray some carb cleaner at the fuel intake wiht the engine running. If the sound becomes slighty better/healthy then add some more carb cleaner to the fuel from the fuel filter and start the engine and rev up & down to clear nozzles thoroughly................sodeep

Transmission gears or the bearings or the throws are worn - so things do not stay where they are supposed to & this cause the tranny to pop out of gear.

Speedometer Problem

Did you try the instrument self test? With ignition switch in off, press the odometer reset button and while pressing it, switch ignition in run. Now all indicator lamps will come on and you can release the button. All indicators will run to full scale and should return to normal position.
The instrument cluster gets the speed information from the PCM (powertrain control module). The PCM gets the info from the ABS controller. I would pull the fuse from the ABS controller and see if it will change the speed indication. If it does, then the problem is with the ABS controller, if it doesn t, then most probably the instrument cluster is faulty.

What causes a 2008 pontiac g5 idle to bounce a lot at certain speeds mostly when driving and just holding the gas pedal down enough to keep my speed up at 50 kph or 70 kph

If it mainly happens when under load, I would change the fuel filter. While a semi clogged filter will allows enough fuel to pass when idelling or at slower speeds, it might not give consistant fuel flow when at higher speeds or under load - like climbing a hill.

Speedometer - 40MPH

the speedo is electronic, not cable, this problem is caused by a sticking stepper motor that moves the needle, a stepper motor is a miniature electric motor that can move and hold one position, this was a common problem at the dealer I worked at, u will need to pull the speedo and send it out for repair, I use the following link for this service.
