Click on the link. It appears the lower brake lamps are wired through the multifunction switch. The high mount brake lamp isn't wired that way. At the rear, the turn and stop use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. And, at rear, black wire is ground. Got to have voltage and ground.

hi the fuse you will be looking for will be a 15 amp fuse as the loading is low on light curcuits i don't
know which fuse no as they fitted 4 different fuse boxes on the rams but you should start by checking the 15 amp fuses with a multimeter for continuety or some time hold a torch close to the fuses and you will see the link broken

SOURCE: Third brake light flashing when engine is off, no main brake lights

this does not sound like a fuse problem. seems like a wiring issue. You probably have wires shorted together, and/or shorts to ground somewhere.

Brake switch is a good place to start, make sure it's working fine. To find the wiring issue you will need electrical diagrams, so get yourself a repair manual for a 1998 Explorer.

Look at connectors, see if you can find components or connections where all the brake light and tail lights connect to together. Using a multi meter you should be able to pin point the issue if u follow the wiring from the battery to the lights using the diagrams and checking connectors.

SOURCE: I have A 2000 Chevy 3500 Express Van and the brake

Hi,

When you said that you checked the brake switch, did you check it live? Meaning verified live power to the switch, press switch, and then power came out the other terminal?

If so, also verify zero power on brake press, at the offending brake light bulb terminal. You must verify the test light each time you move it...leave running lights on...

After verifying that there is no power coming, after the brake is pressed, note the wire color and find it where it comes to the steering column and test there... This would eliminate wires and connections between front and the rear of the vehicle, unlikely, but needs to be tested.

After verifying no power at that terminal, then yes the t/s switch is certainly suspece. This may be the time to get a mechanic to verify and replace the switch, there are locks, tilt mechanisms, air bags, column bearings, etc involved. Failures risk loss of vehicle control (locking or binding for example.)..

Hope this gets you going in the right direction.

Testimonial: "Thank You. I tried those things and it seemed to be the Emergency Flasher switch in the multi function switch."

if the third brake light works then ther is a broken wire. start looking for it at the tail lights and work forward if you cant find the break you can always run a new possitive wire from either the third brake light to the tail lights or if the trailer wiring harness hase power to the brake lights you can splice in there as well. hope this helps

Check engine light is on my 1998 ram van 3500

Bring it to a parts store, most will scan for engine trouble codes for free. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the vans diagnostic port (under the dash) and 'read' codes stored in the van's computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest how to fix it. If you have any further questions at that time, post them here with the code #'s. Good luck. Curt
