Question is, does fuel pump relay come in/ go out when ignition switched on? How do you know "no power source to fuel pump", was that because bypassing the relay didn't cause it to run? Or did you check for supply to the pump and find nothing doing?.
Sounds rather like a frozen pump to me... or a blown fuse??

SOURCE: High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....

If you hear the relay click, but no pressure at all then it would be the fuel pump needing replacement

SOURCE: 1987 ford bronco fuel issues

First thing to check out will be the fuel pump relay under the hood. It is the one who drives the pump, so if it is defective the pump will not work either to prime the engine, or to make it run. Secondly, you need to check if the fuel filters are OK cause sometimes they clog up and prevent enough fuel from reaching the engine. Thirdly, check the injector(s) for cloging, and clean or replace them as needed. If none of this helps, then the problem probably has nothing to do with fuel delivery, and the next step to check will be the whole ignition system, which is also one of the most comon bronco problems.

1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 crank / no start. Does tachometer function somehow affect the spark timing?

No, but the tach signal may help you determine if coil is getting signal to spark. If tach needle is moving when engine is cranking over, that means the coil primary circuit is being turned on and off, and that means the ignition control module is working.

Does the 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 4WD have a crank shaft position (CKP) sensor?

The ignition system engine controller uses a distributor sensor with a sector wheel to provide the ignition timing. This distributor pick up coil provides the (CKP) sensor function.

I purchased a 4 terminal starter solenoid. A 3 terminal was on truck. This 4 terminal solenoid includes an S and an I terminal. Is the I terminal used on a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 4WD?

If the truck had a three terminal one on it then you would not use the (I) terminal, nor would it cause you to keep blowing your fusible link. It would cause a hard start cold because all the (I) terminal does is feed 12v directly to the coil on cranking. You have a short in the circuit that is on that fusible link. You need to get a wiring diagram and see what that circuit feeds. If the fuel pump isn't running than disconnect that circuit and see if it keeps the link from blowing. You may have to get a circuit breaker to install temporarily it to help find short. I have used a breaker and have gone directly to the fuse box and feed there to help isolate which circuit it is in. Good luck.

Does an ignition control module have anything to do with fuel pump functioning?

1987 rangers use a device called a TFI module to control ign. timing , this merely triggers a std. coil to fire the center port of distributor cap , this device only controls the coil to fire but does send a pulse for timing back to ecu this sets the base pulse for fuel injection , but its also affected by manifold Air flow and exhaust O2 amounts (closed loop) , but engine should run in base mode (open loop) fuel timing (but not well) , fuel pump relay is enabled to run via ECU output , Now your year ranger had a tech bulletin out on fuel pumps , seems they had a problem getting them to work after a fuel filter was replaced , something about a false backpressure , no if you have no/low fuel pressure then id look at fuel pump power 1st then fuel pump itself assuming you've already tried a new filter of course

My fuel pump is not priming. My ignition control module is bad. Does that module have any relationship to the fuel pump circuitry?

better get the wiring problem fixed first.then on the passenger side kick panel there is a cut off fuel switch that may need to be reset.its a anti roll over to shut fuel off.need to find out why your fusible link is burning out.good luck.

I changed my fuel pump because it has 260,000 miles on it and truck would cut off when It got warm. Now it wont start after I replaced pump. What do I need to do to get it to start again?

Did you put at least 5 gallons in the tank so the pump will prime properly? Do you hear the new pump running for 1 second when the key is turned to run? Do this remove the Schrader valve core from the fuel supply rail to the injectors on the engine fuel pressure test port (don't loose it) and repeatedly cycle the key from off to run, do not crank the engine, this will help to prime the electric fuel pump, but have at least 5 gallons in the tank before starting the process. Make sure someone watches the fuel pressure test port so when fuel starts to flow you stop the priming process before everything is covered in gas. Also a fuel pump doesn't cause the system you described, an ignition control module and stator cause that and are a known problem in this year of truck. Another problem is the ignition starter switch comes apart.
