do you know if there is a way to test the speedometer it self to see if it is bad before buying a new one I found out how to test the speed sensor after I had replaced it but at least I know its working properly now I have replaced parts in the past with new ones that did not work correctly and spent a lot of time chasing my tail trying other options when the part I had just replaced was bad thanks for your help Robert I appreciate it very much have a good evening

The best way is to get access to the plug or wiring at the instrument panel to test the signal to the speedometer from the speed sensor . I will look through my books and see if we can test the gauge.

SOURCE: speedometer, tach and all up front guages stop working randomly!!

I answered on just like this one about a month ago. What's happening is behind the instrument panel is a plug that likes to come undone. Remove the instrument cluster, clean the bulkhead connector and re-install.

BINGO ! I think you hit it right on the nose ! The negative cable that comes from the battery may also have a lead going to the body.
Make sure you do not just look at it but pull on it to make sure it has not coroded through
Check any other body grounds as well, let me know what you find.

Speedometer normally will read 25mph when ur doing 70. gas gage dont work at all light will come on tho. tach works. will read around the correct speed once in a while. it is a 2004 model year.

The speedometer is run by a small electric generator located at the transmision, the unit could be full of fluid or just worn out, either way it could need to be replaced. However with the other problems you are having first check the ground to the dash printed circuit as this may
be the culprit causing your problems as well!

Both my speedometer and tachometer stopped working. My speedometer stopped working first and less than a minute later, the tach stopped as well. My code reader says speed sensor which makes sense, but what...

The speed sensor can be tested with a scanner. Only take 10 minutes, If it works then your instrument cluster took a dive. Same thing with the RPM. If the scanner sees it then the cluster is bad. Getting it diagnosed properly is your best bet. You can get the cluster rebuilt for alot less than new. modulemaster.com does them.

have you tried working on one problem at a time?
have you check the body computer for any codes?
and to also verify the bus line is ok.
if you find nothing wrong with BCM or bus,
try checking the speed sensor for an output signal or if the gear is bad.

My guess is that the speed sensor has gone out or the wires that go to it have been knocked off somehow.
