do you know if there is a way to test the speedometer it self to see if it is bad before buying a new one I found out how to test the speed sensor after I had replaced it but at least I know its working properly now I have replaced parts in the past with new ones that did not work correctly and spent a lot of time chasing my tail trying other options when the part I had just replaced was bad thanks for your help Robert I appreciate it very much have a good evening
The best way is to get access to the plug or wiring at the instrument panel to test the signal to the speedometer from the speed sensor . I will look through my books and see if we can test the gauge.

I answered on just like this one about a month ago. What's happening is behind the instrument panel is a plug that likes to come undone. Remove the instrument cluster, clean the bulkhead connector and re-install.

BINGO ! I think you hit it right on the nose ! The negative cable that comes from the battery may also have a lead going to the body.
Make sure you do not just look at it but pull on it to make sure it has not coroded through
Check any other body grounds as well, let me know what you find.
