I have a 1985 Chevy C/30 pick-up with a 7.4L 454. Truck has been running fine and about a week ago I was driving down the freeway and the motor backfired and and lost power and eventually died. I stopped the truck and tried to start it and It started back up. I started driving and a few miles down the road it did it again like its running out of fuel. Some times it starts back up and other times all it does is turns over without even a sputter. Today It did it again, the first time it died and the second time it started to die so i feathered the throttle and it sputtered and backfired and then all of a sudden It started running fine. I have replaced the fuel pump and the ignition switch under the dash. It has new plugs and wires. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge but it does seem to be getting fuel. Please help I need it for work

I am getting plenty of fuel and here is what is going on. I got the truck to fire and it was sounding great, I went to take it for a test drive and when I put it into gear it died on me and would not fire back up. I checked and I'm getting NO spark at all. I am lost as to what could be causeing this. All the wires are connected good. What can be causeing this or what and how do i check this? please help

85 with TBI only needs 13lbs of fuel pressure. verify that the fuel filter is clean. there is no easy way to ck fuel pressure, special adapters are needed, I dont have info here at home but there should be a relay for the pump, on the firewall and the oil pressure switch also powers the pump. did you replace the pump trying to fix this problem or did you just mention it to help troubleshoot the problem? verify that the fuel pump wiring has a good ground, should have been a eyelet that bolted to the frame..when you initially turn the key on, you should hera the fuel pump power up for 2 seconds, then go off, after the engine starts, the power for the pump goes through the oil pressure switch.

SOURCE: 1992 Silverado backfiring through the throttle body

you could put the pickup on a cylinder pressure test and see if you have a bad valve causing the engine to pop.
you could have a bad wire or spark plug.
the timming chain could of went off a cog on the timming sprokets causing to pop.
gettin to much gas could cause it to.

SOURCE: Timing problem with 1985 Ford Ranger

more than likely it is a timing problem,or the valves are not seating right, diesel in petrol ??air leak on inlet manifold without having the motor in front of me its difficult to diagnose. This is an older vehicle of potential classic possibilities. Therefore because its so valuable i would suggest you call a local mobile mechanic. One with a few years under his belt who has worked on these vehicles when they were new,and if he doesnt do it right kick his zimmer frame away

89 chevy 3/4 ton. 2wd. 454. AT. truck runs good

check your timing, check that your ignition pick up coil is good. also check your fuel pressure. and check for any vacuum leaks. double check your coolant temp sensor to the ecm it tells the ecm what temp it is and the ecm adjusts the fuel amount accordingly.

93 s10 2.8 wants to stall out after restart

You probably have a clogged fuel filter. There should be an inline fuel filter between the gas tank and motor, replace that and your good to go. I have the same problem with my c10 pick up.
