More than likely it is the combination switch on the steering column. This is a common issue on the older vehicles.

SOURCE: 98 Chevy pickup brake lights just stopped working

have you tried to find the brake pedal switch? follow the brake pedal under the dash and there should be a switch that the brake pedal presses to activate the lights when you push it in . if everything else has been checked then I suspect that the switch has moved enough to not work or it may be just bad. let me know if this was it.... hope this works

SOURCE: where is tail light fuse in 1996 chevrolet

Left of the steering wheel & under the dash is the fuse panel for this. No.9 is for the tail lights, but also for many other lights such as licence lamp/parking lamp/side marker/tail gate/etc...
There is also an under the hood fuse/relay panel, but it does not have the tail light fuse in it.

My 1996 Nissan pickup has a short but I can't find it no dash lights tail lights and when I change my headlights from dim to bright the vehicle cuts out ?

These can be a pain in the backside, best answer I can give you is to grab your trusty digital volt meter and start tracing your wiring harness, you'll need obviously, the DVM, a wiring schematic of your whole vehicle and a whole lot of patience.

I have a 97 nissan pickup and the head lights will not turn on, an the tail lights will not shut off. had to take fuse out to turn off tail lights. turn signal switch??

Yes it sounds like the switch is stuck in the park position.
You could pull the harness plug for the switch and check the circuits with a meter, or replace the switch.

1993 Nissan pickup. Both headlights failed. Tail lights are working. Fuses are ok.

It may be a failure of the master control switch on the steering column. You can remove the steering wheel to gain access to the switch and trouble shoot the circuit there to see if the contacts have worn out.

Marker lights do not work. 1994 nissan pickup SE

I would start by checking all the fuses, then check the headlight switch, test it for power as you did the tail light, then check the wiring coming out of the cab down the frame to the rear of bed check for a short but if all fuses are good then will not be a short, may be a bad switch and the most important is the bulbs, make sure they are good.

The dash lights and tail lights are not working but everything else lights properly. All the fuses are good. What next?

dash lights, tail lights, park lights and plate lights do share the same source of power for pickups.
try to replace your dash light and tail light bulbs, it would probably solve your problem.

Tail light failure

Check for a bad frame ground to the rear lights. The ground is normally a common ground, not a specific ground for each bulb.
This problem happens quite a bit on pickup trucks.
