Hi, you have to have the battery connected while the engine is running as the alternator is sending a trickle charge back to the battery to keep it charged up. When the alternator does not find the battery then the circuit is broken as you disconnected the connection .

Test the alternator charging capability by connecting a volt meter to the battery terminals and starting the engine. The voltage should be at least 13 VDC.
If it's less it will not charge the battery enough.

The alternator needs power from the battery to energise the rotor, so without the dash lights the alternator is not charging. Check for a fuse link near the battery. Get the dash lights on and the charging fault will clear. Sorry I can't be more specific as to the dash problem.

Well, battery being new wouldn't hurt light performance. I think that I would check the alternator to make sure it is generating enough charge for the car to run the lights. Have it checked at your local autozone or advance auto or Sears where the starting and charging system can be checked out. Maybe check if the bulbs are good or not by replacing a set. Also, check that the reflector on the lens is good.

Where did you buy the Alternator? It could be a defective unit. Chain auto parts stores have a poor record with rebuilds.

check timing, fuel filter,pump,injectors, resistor, distributor, plugs, wires.

probably your charging system isnt charging the battery most likley you need a new alternator
