could be. most fuse boxes have a chart of what fuses control what on the back side of the cover. try that.

When you open the fuse panel there should be a fuse location map on the backside of the cover. The map shows the location and what system(s) the fuse protects. Find the one for your brake lights. Pull the fuse and replace it with the *exact* same amperage rating as specified on the location map (just in case it was replaced with an incorrect amp rating). There are two fuse panels in most cars. One is inside the vehicle usually located under the dash. These fuses are typically low amperage fuses. The second fuse/relay panel is located in the engine compartment. These are high amp fuses for things like the A/C compressor clutch, Anti-Lock brakes, fuel pump and other high draw systems. Check both places.

i know on a gl320 there is a chart in with the spare tire

Check the high beam relay in the central Junction Box (Fuse box) under dash and check fuse F2.35, 20 amp yellow. One is bad.

A 2002 S500 actually has 3 differant fuse boxes.
2 of them are located under the engine hood, they are both against the firewall in the back corners of the engine compartment. The fuse box on the drivers side of the firewall has most of the common fuses in it.
The last one is located under the rear seat. There is a access panel below the passengers side rear seat, just unclip the plastic panel from the top.
Fuse chart can be found in the rear with the spare tire tools.

relays are normally in the fuse panel on the left side of dash by knee.
