sounds like this car just needs new plugs a misfire is 99 percent the time cap rotor plugs and wires out maybe they are fowled out fuel excessive is becuase it is not burning off the fuel in the cylinders from no spark

your engine management wont necesseraly come on. i had the same problem with mt 2000 e46 model. take out your air flow meter from its round casing. u will normally need a special tool to do this. but a small pair of vice grips will do. read the part number off it. contact automotive supplies on 02871 261261. i got the insert from them for my bmw cost me £36.00 when i plugged it back in the car went like new. the part info is as follows. PBT-GF30 FIVE PIN AIR FLOW METER. your origional part will be a bosch part but ur car will run just as good with this one. one from bosch will cost you £285.00. if you need any more help post me back, hope this helps. remember dealers will only rip u off......
The fan may have a separate control module which is going faulty. I would let a dealer diagnose it for you (fix a price with them first) and if you repair turns out to be simple carry it out yourself to save on cash.
