78 chevy 350 motor has no spark or power to the distributor

there has to be a wire from the coil to the distributor to the points inside the distributor
if it has points , check that they are not shorted out and that the moving point is insulated from the distributor plate
check for a condenser attached to the moving point and fixed to the distributor body
if it has an electronic system , it could be a problem igniter unit in the distributor

Your 12 VDC from the ignition goes to the the bottom terminal of the resistor. (Check the 12 VDC with a meter or a light when the key is switched on and off before connecting it. The wire from the top of the resistor goes to the + side of the coil. The - (negative post) wire goes to the side of the distributor.
The firing order is 1 3 2. Cylinder #1 on the distributor cap is by the vacuum advance on the distributor. Cylinder #2 on the top of the distributor cap is 120 deg clockwise from #1 and the final open slot on the top of the distributor cap will be #3.

Took it to car wash and washed motor off and now it will not start

It souunds as if you got the ignition wet. Try spraying the plug connections at the distributor and around the cap with WD 40. It wil displace the water and dry the distributor and wires.

56 ford y block, what colors go where on the coil?

doent matter if its an old motor with a coil ,the coil is marked + and - but in honesty with a very old motor it doesnt make any difference

What is the correct procedure to check and correct the distributor timing.

The distributor is driven directly by the camshaft. The end of the camshaft contains a set of grooves that engage the distributor shaft. These grooves prevent the distributor from being incorrectly installed.


  1. Using masking tape, remove the spark plug wires from the cap and number them for installation as they are removed.
From 1988-onwards, all Honda Civic series models were fuel injected.
  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses, the primary wire and the high tension wire. If equipped with fuel injection, remove the four prong connector from the crank angle sensor.
  2. Remove the hold-down bolt(s) and pull the distributor from the head.

On CRX with fuel injection, there are three bolts.
  1. Crank the engine until No. 1 piston is at TDC of its compression stroke.
  2. Using a new O-ring, install it on the distributor housing.
  3. On the all models, the distributor drive gear remains engaged when the distributor is removed. To install, align the distributor and turn the shaft until the drive locks and the distributor seats in the cylinder head.
  4. Loosely install the hold-down bolt(s). Tighten the bolt(s) temporarily and replace the cap.
  5. Connect all wires and hoses.
  6. Start the engine and adjust the ignition timing.

Need to put a camshaft position sensor on a 98 oldsmoblie silhouette, where is it on the motor?

Remove your Distributor Cap and Rotor button, and the black domed looking thing under the rotor button is your Camshaft sensor. It should have three to four wires sticking out of the distributor connected to the wiring harness fairly close to the distributor.

Hei distributor on old L6 engiune won't fire coil

'56 engine was likely a "blue flame" engine that had a points type ignition system. If someone installed a HEI setup in there, you need to know what year vehicle it came from. The old system used a hot wire from the ignition switch to the (+) side of an external coil...the (-) lead went to the points. The most common conversion uses the same (+) wire but it then connects to the "batt" terminal on the distributor cap.(coil is inside) There are no other wires involved except for the short harness that goes directly into the distributor that connects the coil, pickup coil and control module to each other..
