You must remove the entire dash assembly, this job requires a factory service manual or u will likely never get it apart without breaking it.

SOURCE: how to know if heater

If you have an odor of coolant inside the vehicle, or the windshield fogs up when the defroster in turned on, or the carpet on the passenger floor is wet and doesn't dry, you probably have a heater core leaking.

SOURCE: Tell me where heater core

Fortunately your motor is easy to access. See picture and directions below. Before replacing your blower, I recommend you also see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6234839-doesn_t_heater_or_air_conditioner_blow . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

  1. Lower the glove compartment.
  2. Detach the electrical connector.
  3. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
  4. Remove the 3 blower motor screws.
  5. Remove the blower motor wheel clip.
  6. Remove the blower motor wheel.
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

SOURCE: 2004 ford freestar drivebelt

All you need is a 13mm boxed end wrench. The tensioner pulley is the one all the way on the bottom towards the rear of the van. You can reach it under the van. Slide under the van in front of the passenger front tire and you will wee the pulley. Put the wrench on the bolt and pull towards you to release the tension on the belt.

2004 ford freestar heat blowing cold

You need a new heater core and/or thermostat and/or water pump, once you've determined you dont have a busted hose or radiator leak (unlikely because the car would overheat).

If no heat could be a thermostat , a heater control valve , low on antifreeze .....Hope this helps
