Read the OBDII code (or have the codes read). There are multiple possible causes. The code will give a clear indication of the cause.

Depends on the engine, if its a M62, its under the hood, torwards the front drivers side. 9e6fcd7.jpgIf it a N62, it is on the underside of the vehicle, next to the oil drain plug. Its the black plastic housing with a 6mm allen bolt in it(thats used to drain the oil out before removal)25e2e14.png

You have an alternator or battery concerne, low voltage caused all the other problems,Start with a battery, then have alternator tested. The failsafes are designed to keep from burning up solenoids and other electronic components.

SOURCE: BMW X5 2004 TRANS FAILSAFE PROG

Hi; If I get the 'Trans Failsafe Prog" message twice within about 2 hours, The SES light will go on automatically. Since I do not seem to have any real transmission problems, this SES message clears itself in about 24 hours. The "Trans Failsafe Prog" messageseems to be used to indicate other transmission problems as well, like loss of transmission fluid, so be careful. I have a 2002 X5. Cheers. Omer

I have just had a message come up, engine failsafe prog, what could this mean? BMW X5 3.0l petrol 2001

You need to scan it for a fault code, it could be one of the cam or crank sensors or a vacuum leak/airflow problem

Transmission failsafe

from your brief description i would say your alternator has failed, which means the car can no longer recharge the battery or supply battery to the car itself.

I have a 2004 BMW X5, i was driving up a hill when the trans failsafe prog light came on, it has done this before & I was told pull over turn engine off, wait 5min at it will go, which it did. Though...

The transmission has gone into limp mode. My Boomer done the same thing' if it wont reset itself i think the only option is a BMW dealer to faultfind. Very complicated computor controlled transmission beyond any novice im afraid.
