It sounds like yourin needof a new fuel pump because the sensor and the pump are interconnected now.

Sending unit is bad, sending unit , I would advise replacing sending unit and fuel pump together.--- even though fuel pump is still working , it is old. and could go out ! and you only want to the job 1 time. I guess you know these parts are in the fuel tank? the new strainer will come with new fuel pump. some cars also have a external fuel filter under the car body, you do NOT want a dirty fuel filter with a new fuel pump, it is a big job pulling the fuel tank out of cars. do your research before starting the job. very few cars have a panel where you can get the fuel pump out of the car , without taking the fuel tank out of the car, and yes you do have to take the fuel pump out to replace the sending unit, which sends the signal to your fuel gage. a word of advice let your fuel tank be almost empty, you do not want to lift a lot of gas as it weighs around 8 pounds a gallon, again do your research before you start this job. NOTE , reset your trip indicater to keep track of the miles you drive so you do not run out of gas. until you get parts replaced GOOD LUCK. Tom

The nature of the gauge is that it should behave with a linear taper between full and empty. If it works when full but then malfunctions as the level drops, the variable resistor in the sending unit which is housed along with the fuel pump in the gas tank is almost certainly at fault. The sending unit will have to be replaced to fix the problem. Expect this to be an expensive endeavor.

The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

I had the same problem. My battery was going bad. When I replaced it with a new one, the fuel gauge worked fine.

Definitely the gauge can be changed, provided the float in the fuel tank is OK, i.e. no leaks. This float connects to a potentiometer which records the current flowing thru it and displays it in the gauge. So before replacing the gauge measure the current and match that against the quantity of fuel in the tank...............sodeep

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

Thanks Tom, a bit frustrated that it would be that, we just replaced the fuel pump this past spring, guess we should’ve had them do everything. We will run it low and see if we can manage it ourselves....first time around was 750.00, hope we can figure it out before we drive south with it!
check on youtube.com and watch the video on how to change the fuel pump and sender on your car. you may not find the exact car but try and get the same model and as close as you can to the same car. NOTE = when you jack car up you must get the car hi enough to get fuel tank out. I put a fuel pump and sending unit in wife car and sending unit only lasted around a year before it started to act up . and not read right.
do watch video on you tube before you try doing the job. to get a feel if you are up to the job! NOTE-- not many but some cars do have a panel that you can remove the fuel pump without taking out the fuel tank. not many cars have this feature you may want to get a manual at any auto parts store. around $20.00 give or take , I am going to mention the videos a third time Because they are a big help for me watching someone do the job! you can use your trip indicator on car to keep track of your miles , so you don,t run out of gas.! another thing you can do is talk to the parts man at auto parts store , as you may get someone who has done the job before? and he or she MAY give you some good ideas on the job? talk to the people you know MAYBE someone has changed a fuel pump before?
