Can't open back passenger door on 2002 Mazda Tribute
Using the handles (both inside and out) it feels as if there is nothing attached on the insides. What is the easiest way to pop the panel off? I was afraid to try anything without asking.

The rod may have come off the inside handle or latch. You will have to take off the door panel and see if its connected. Sometimes the inside handle breaks where the rod attaches. If not the latch would be faulty.
sounds like the linkage came apart on the inside of the door. Remove the inner door panel & u will see the linkage probably disconnected. find out where its disconnected & reconnect it. there may be a clip which holds it together which u may find in the bottom of the door.
always check fuses first. after that do you here motor running inside door even though window doesn't move. the glass may have slipped track. Are all windows not working if yes then it's power supply go back to fuse. You might have to open inside panel of door and check track or replace motor. they can be bought at parts stores.
don't know about your trunk... but for the passenger door, it sounds like the linkage connecting to the outer handle is broken...on the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle,
arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the
panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want
to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to
get it off the window ledge.
Linkage broken?... only way to find out is INSPECT the system. Have you done this?.. If not, SOLUTION!.. Take vehicle to Mazda and have it PROPERLY diagnosed -- this way you'll know what's wrong and what's needed to FIX it. AGREED?
I just fell into the same situation. My interior driver's door handle just does nothing all of a sudden. I went on the Mazda Forum website and came away with at least a temporary fix.
The lock switch can be used to open the door from the inside by pushing it the opposite way it's pushed when locking the door. In other words, the rear portion of the lock switch needs to be depressed and the front portion needs to be pulled away from the door. It may be difficult to do with the trim piece around the lock still on. The trim piece can be removed by pulling the small plastic cap away from the base (it's on a plastic hinge) off and unscrewing the holding screw underneath it. Pull the handle away from the door and the trim piece will come right off.
I'm using that as a temporary solution now until I get a new/used door assembly.
Hope that helps.
this ones trick but ive done it. you have to carfully pry back the top part of the door panel and you should get enogh room for a small arm to fit in and manuall pull up on the relese lever for the latch to the door then you can take the door apart for inspection
