SOURCE: 2004 Mazda RX8

Had the same problem today with flooded engine. I tried new plugs ($86.00) and used the clear flood mode but to no avail. Spoke to a tech at the mazda dealership and odd as this sounds it worked. On the right side of the engine on the intake about half way down the runner you will find 2 rubber plugs that cover vacumn ports. The front one is the easier of the 2 to access, hook up a piece of vacumn hose to that port, on the other end you need to hook up a funnel. You will have to adapt the hose up to get it to fit. Remove the fuel pump relay, it is the blue relay at the front of the fuse box and is closest to the radiator. Pour a half to 3/4 quart of transmission fluid in the funnel and have someone crank the engine(with a battery charger or jumper cables hooked to your battery so you won't run the battery down). Leave throttle closed, as the fluid gets sucked down you will here engine compression build and it will act like it is going to start, at that point while it is still being cranked stick the fuel pump relay back in. It should then start, it may spit and sputter but it will run. Remove the hose from the vacumn port and reinstall port plug. The car will smoke for quite awhile but the smoke will finally disipate. From start to finish it only took about 2 min. to get the car started. I asked him if that much fluid would hurt it and he said no. He also said that they see this problem a couple of times a week. He also said that they don't take the plugs out and clean prior to doing the procedure, it will work on the old plugs. This saved me a tow to the dealership and probably a couple hundred dollars.

SOURCE: 1990 toyota celica fuel problem.

start with trying to start the car with your foot hard on gas pedal, all the way to the floor this will stop fuel flow on start up its called clear flood mode. as the engine starts to fire and run ease off the pedal until it idles, it may take some time to run smoothly. if it doesnt run or stalls after a short time and then will not run i would try a ECU engine control unit as it supplies the earth circuit to the injectors, may be thats whats holding them open or they are dribbling badly and require overhauling

1990 supra, cranks, fuel pumps, but does not start

basics, always works. they are.
1: good engine?, (compression over 150psi cranked w.o.t)
2: good spark , got spark to all cylinders?. (a simple test)
3: fueling good. (not too lean, not flooding)???
from 1920 to now, all cars running on gasoline.

i can advice a simple test for each, non are complex. or costly .

if spark is good, and test fuel fails (spray)?
i bet you skipped #1 ,

here is a guy running a gas motor with no fuel in car. period

see?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=HhXwVhYfPm8#t=141s

he is a human carb. here.
just keep eyes away from the induction ports , in case it backfires.
dont 1000 of times by me.

one other tests is to (EFI) is to kill EFI (pump relay pull)
and start car on test fuel.
this helps prove engine was flooded and runs. like above.
also the opr.guide told you to clear floods with
WOT, wide open cranking, this tells tells the ECU to cut fuel 100%
to clear any flood, this works on all cars.

1996 1500 dodge ram v8 magnum won't start. I have check the battery, the starter and the alternator! The truck seems to want to start but it doesn't..some guy at a auto body store said to check the fuel...

If it cranks good but won't start, make sure battery has a full charge. Have a helper crank it while you check for spark at the plugs, gasoline engine. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse. Let us know what you find? I can only help with testing. You have to do the testing.

Faint odor of gas when i start my 93 boneville

It could be flooded with fuel. You could try pulling the fuel pump relay and cranking the engine to clear it out. A mechanic would check for spark at the plugs and also see if the plugs are fuel fouled.
Usually if the oil pressure light comes on the engine will eventually die because the fuel pump stops getting voltage.

My engine wont crank like as if the engine is flooded...how do i clean a flooded engine? it smells like gasoline on my spark plugs when i took them out...please help me...im out of ideas....ive checked...

If the engine truely is flooded, you need to let the vehical sit. The more you try to start the car, the more gas you are pumping into the engines. If you let the vehical sit, some gas will drain out. Hope this helps! Please rate 4 thumbs up!

Car firing but will not start plugs sooty

You could try the Clear Flood procedure....Throttle wide open and crank engine . This sometimes works, but.....

These engines suffer from fuel wash down. The gasoline washes away the oil in the cylinders.....and compression goes away, not making the fuel fire off.

The film of oil in the cylinders and rings seals the piston to the bore making for good compression.

Remove the spark plugs....crank over the motor to eject raw fuel...dribble a couple of spoonfuls of motor oil down each plug hole and crank briefly.

Install plugs and try restart.

The engine indicator on the dash wont stay lit before the start of the car, the engine turnsover but doesnt start

There is no simple answer, there are to many variables. If you have access to a scan tool, pulling the codes should help. Without them its back to old school hunt and peck method. At this point we need to narrow down the problem. You need to test for spark.
  1. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  2. Remove the spark plugs and install the spark plug wires to each spark plug.
  3. Ground (do not hold spark plug) the spark plug; check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
Crank the engine for no more than 2 seconds at a time to prevent flooding the engine with gasoline.
If you have spark, You will want to make sure you have fuel injector pulse, along with fuel pressure. If you have spark ..simply spray some starting fluid in through the air filter and hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over while spraying. If it fires up, you know it is fuel related( fuel pump, regulator, or ECM if no injector pulse) . If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well. This should give you a few things to test and check to start you on your way to narrowing it down. If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection for power and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). If it is DIS( no distributor). It may be the Crank sensor or the ECU. The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well.
The ECU uses the signal sent from the Crank sensor to trigger the spark and fuel injectors. ( make certain you have checked all fuses)

Continuing to crank the engine, without touching the accelerator pedal should "unflood" the engine. Remember that what floods is the combustion chamber, where the spark plugs are, not the carb itself. If the flooding was really severe, maybe the plugs are unable to make sparks. Take out the plugs, leave them out for an hour (to allow gasoline to evaporate out of the cylinder chambers) and put fresh plugs in. Good luck.

Wont start, sprayed quick start in still nothing, smell gas and can hear the fuel pump engauge

You need to check for spark. You probably do not have spark causing the engine to flood. Check your ignition parts and see what shape they are in. If you have not had a tune up in 50,000 miles you may want to start there.
