1991 GMC Safari. I need to do a compression test on it?

I need a little more info, does it spin and not start or does it not spin over at all. If it spins over, check to see if the fuel pump is running. If you have someone turn the key on (do not turn to start) and listen at the fuel filler with the cap off you should here a low humming noise for 2-3 seconds indicating the fuel pump is running. If you hear nothing the pump is not suppling fuel to the engine, it's a common failure on this vehicle.

there are 2 mounts, one on each side at bottom of engine block just above the lip of the oil pan about center on left and right of block.

Yes, however, most of the new inexpensive scan tools are designed for OBD2 cars (1996 or later). Don't give up hope though. Because of the age, many of the previously expensive but not up to date scanners are available for a song used. Start with ebay.
