Jeep will not hold an idle. Just wants to die.

I have just replaced my computer in my 1999 jeep yj, (Its a YJ not a cherokee), and the same thing is happening as before. It wont stay running. Difficult to get it started. Everything else works. ''Check engine'' light comes on. With the old computer the gas guage didn't work, but now it does with the new computer, but it still wont stay running. The new computer that I got for it is a rebuild. Is it possible that the new, rebuilt, computer needs to be reprogramed, or can I just hook it up and go? Or is the problam else where?

Check your engine to see if ,it has a yellow or blue spark and if it does then check your fuel filters and fuel pump to see if they are working or not.

I have a 1989 jeep yj it started blowing oil out the crankcase vent any ideas why

PCV bad. (or its hose pinched, clogged or even backward)
  1. PCV is failing fix this first for $5 or remove it and see how bad blow by is. visually. (remove only valve covers side to test )
  2. or cracked or collapsed piston.
  3. or cracked head gasket, compression tests pass?
yes one of the best jeeps are YJ, not full 10 stinking married computers , wish every day I never sold my 2002,
2002 is the last good jeep IMO

blow by is most mostly past bad piston rings, even warped cylinder from past overheated engine,

The YJ used a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4 or optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 until 1990

which one, 4 or 6 cylinders.???

88 jeep yj carb 6 cly automatic, where is the map

If you have a carb you do not have a map or IAC valve. They are on fuel injected throttle body setups. You really should go to an auto parts store and get a book if your really interested.

High idle on 93 jeep yj 4 cly no vaccum leaks

This could be a few different things;1.Sticking throttle linkage.2.The choke may be not adjusted properly or sticking.3.The idle adjustment may be wrong.4.Somtimes valve clearances may bring the idle up.Check the throttle sticking and the auto choke first. These are the most common.Hope this helps

1992 YJ can only shift into 3rd & 4th gear. No Reverse

The same thing happend to one of my wranglers, a 95 yj 4cyl 2.5 liter. The "Aisin AX-5" is the transmission that jeep used on the yj and tj 4cyl and 83 cherokee and up 4cyl, and the "Aisin AX-15"was used on some of the 6cyl models. Both are a "light duty" transmission according to the transmission manufacturer. As everyone knows, A jeep is no light duty vehicle, the shifting slider, a fork like item slides the gears back and forth over the drive and output gears to change the gears. and with heavy use or lack of maintanice they can break, they also can break cause of the cheap casting they used in the tranny. Other problems happen in those trannys too. The only thing is to tear the tranny apart and find out what failed and replace. I did this on the kitchen table ofer a day off. being the up own an early 90s yj, If you are one who doesn't work on their own car, I would find a good garage that is good with jeeps, they are not to expencive to fix, and when they are taken care of, will be a joy to own.
I hope this helps, Jeep ownership is a great thing.
