I just had a mechanic add a quart and 1/2 to my 2000 jeep cherokee sport 6cyl. The gauge will drop to zero when I am stopped and then the check gauges light comes on. It will go off as soon as I give it gas. Is this the pressure gauge going bad or possibly my oil pump?
It sounds like most likely its your Oil pump, if you have no pressure at stop and when you hit gas it sets the C/E light off, Guages in dash wont set off Check Engine Light. Replace Oil Pump.
Possibly the sending unit, but pumps generally do not fail, crank bearings do, lowering oil pressure from "bleed off". I suggest that you replace the sending unit (inexpensive). But, if when the gauge is reading zero, you hear any tapping or knocking in the engine, have a pressure test done using a mechanical gauge. If pressure is in fact low, the problem is internal and needs to be corrected immediately. if there are no engine noises and the installation of a new sender does not help, use marvel oil added to engine oil. It will help clean oil passages and most times will restore sender operation in a few days.
SOURCE: 99 jeep cherokee sport 4.0l 6cyl voltage will go to 19v
The problem sounds intermittent, if you put volt meter on the battery while it is at that 19volt mark/reading(on the gauge cluster) you will be able to see if it is true. If your alternator is really charging over 16volts the lights should be getting brighter then usual and/or they are burning out. Find out ASAP, if the alternator has a defective voltage regulator, it needs to be replaced. Prolong use will damage components.
