I don't know if you already had the scanning done, to track the failing sensor
but it looks like the symptoms are proper to a failing crankshaft position sensor, because it gives incorrectly the instructions to the ECM, and the computer is assuming that the car is asking to change gears, and to give
more gas when in reality it is not like that. look for the PO731 issue.
You mean check engine light flashing??? if so then the engine is skipping and the lack of power putput will cause the trans to change gears constantly. is this the issue you describe?

ok what does the shift indicator light up when put in gear? does it match and say d,3,2,1,p,r? and is the shifter hard to move?
ok then i believe you overdrive isnt disengauging may be trans running hot and valve sticking or a bad electronic shift solenoid. i wish i could help more but ive never dealt with this model mazda ailing like this, they are a rare car in the northeast. i wish you luck but the best advice is have the dealer or a trans shop investigate it for you.

hi...thanks for reply....however its the HOLD button that flashes...the car will change gear but not smoothly like there is no clutch (auto transmission)
if the hold comes on flashing whilst driving at a higher speed the rev counter jumps higher as if the car has dropped down a gear
shift light matches etc...shifter not hard to move....the problem just comes on when im driving...if it starts to flash and i have to slow say for a roundabout or junction, when i accelerate away again this is when the car changes gear with a"crunch"...sometimes by stopping the car the hold light will stop flashing, othertimes i have to physical turn the ignition off to stop it
