91 Toyota Cressida Same struggle up hills

I brought it to my mechanic but he said that I have to replace my engine. Sure that'll fix any problem the car has, but I don't think the whole thing has to be replaced.
He said it is my harmonic balancer throwing off my timing. I need to know then why I can drive to my job 17 miles away with the engine running rough but still running isn't hot?
Granted my exhaust is scorching my catalytic converter and resonator, but what is causing the problem?

I'm not getting rid of this car so please help.

Check to see if the catalytic converter is clogged, a clogged converter will cause poor performance, the engine to overheat and the exhaust to glow red hot. That should FixYa. Find a different mechanic.

91 cressida running rough

The mechanic is probably tight, these engines have had known head gasket issues at cylinder #6 especially, have the system tested by doing a block test, most repair shops can do this, it's a chemical test that checks for hydrocarbons in the coolant, you can do this yourself, just buy the test kit a a autoparts store and follow the instructions.

How to replace front strut insert of toyota cressida model 91

Im not sure what car the instructions above are for, but it's not a Cressida. They dont have upper front control arms.

Anyways,

You remove the brake line, brake caliper, brake rotor. Then you remove the sway bar end link that attaches to the shock housing. Next remove the lower 2 shock bolts and the 3 upper mount bolts in the engine bay. Then you push down on the lower control arm so that you can remove the entire shock/spindle assembly.

Then take it to a shop to compress the spring to take it all apart.

My 1987 Toyota Cressida jerks when stopped at lights and accelerates slowly.

sounds like your ignition timing is REALLY REALLY late, should be 10 degrees BTDC. also check the air filter as this could cause poor acceleration. those 5M-GE/7M-GE engines also want premium gas (91 pump octane or better) they run horribly on lower grade gasolines.

Overheatin while on a long trip at traffic lights 91 toyota cressida

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

===

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

===

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Blinking o/d off light on 91 toyota cressida

if your od light is blinking on your cluster then it is the same as a check engine for your transmisson. you will need to read the code by finding how to read the diagnostic plug. there is one in the engine bay and one under the steering column. i havent had time to check them myself to see if they are the same or what are their functions yet.
