Key stuck in ignition, Won't start ['05 Trailblazer EXT]

Daughter started up car, put it in reverse. As we were pulling out the ABS light came on, the parking brake light came on, and the symbol on the dash of the four wheels with a wrench came on. Told her to put it in park, we double checked the parking brake, turned off the car. Key would not come to the lock position, we tried to restart the car, you can hear all the electrical working, but the car with not start. We have tried moving the steering wheel, checked fuses, double checked the parking brake and the shifter to be sure it is in park.

There is a collar on the steering column that is activated by a cable coming from the shifter. The cable sometimes gets out of adjustment and the collar does not return to the full park position. Now, herein lies the problem, I've forgotten more about cars than most high end engineers will ever learn. Therefore, I cannot remember if the cable from the shifter comes up on the out side or inside on this vehicle. They change from year to year. However, if you reach around the column, just below the key cylinder area you'll find a sleeve about 2-3 inches wide. Grab this sleeve and with both hands try to spin it counterclockwise. If you can, try to turn your key to the lock position. If it works bingo. If not than i've just typed a lot of words for nada. Good luck my friend, Dana

Ok, do the following procedure if it does not work try it again with a new key if problem still exists the ignition switch/passlock sensor needs to be replaced then the following procedure will need to be performed again.

1. Turn key into on position with engine off.
2. Bump key into start position for a second without trying to start it and leave key in on position.
3. Leave key in on position for at least 10 minutes and security light will turn off.

Starter on 2004 chevy trailblazer

If you can't get the key out of the ignition, it's probably the ignition switch (where the key goes in) that is bad, not the starter. The starter is on the right side under the exhaust manifold behind the right front wheel. It's not easy to change on those unless you know what you're doing.
