BMW X3 2.5si M series. High Oil Consumption

I recently bought the above car.
After a few weeks the oil light came on indicating there was 1 litre of oil left in the engine. I topped it up by one litre.
1200 miles later the same warning light has come on again and and reading is indicating there is only a litre of oil left in the engine again.
There is no visble leak and the engine looks clean under the bonnet.
Is this normal oil consumption for this model?

Thanks
Helen

Hi, this consumption seems high, i would take it to a dealer and ask them to check the oil sensor.......
P.S. is there a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, if so, it may be burning a little oil, ask dealer to check it

Excessive oil consumption on my Pontial Torrent 2006

In the great plan of things simply claiming excessive oil consumption is not enough. You think you know what you mean but how much is excessive?

Car manufacturers insist before taking any warranty action for excessive oil consumption a test must be carried out to decide whether the consumption is excessive and whether repair will be economic. Even though your car isn't under warranty the principle generally will be the same.

An oil consumption test is carried out after a few basic checks and means topping up the oil exactly and then driving 750 miles of mixed town and country driving that doesn't include any sustained high speeds or heavy congested traffic. The oil is then checked and topped up exactly and if the quantity is less than 1 litre it is considered acceptable due to any improvement being uneconomic to achieve.

How many miles is your car covering per litre?

Of course if the engine is producing smoke things are somewhat different...

BMW Oil Service reset for 2001

No need for reset tool for 2001+ model BMW insp. reset - Iginition OFF (POS 0) - Press and Hold the trip odometer button while turning key to position 1 (ACCESSORY) - Keep the button depressed (about 5 secs.) until you see "Oil Service" or "Inspection" with "Reset" or "Re" in the display - *Note: On vehicles with "High" cluster, you will also see the amount of fuel (in litres) remaining until next service - Press the button again and hold for approx. 5 secs. until "Reset" or "Re" flashes - While the display is flashing, briefly press the button again to reset the Service Interval. After the display has shown the new interval you should see "END SIA" for about 2 secs. Note that if the "Reset" or "Re" does not flash, then you have not met the minimum consumption level and cannot reset.

2006, bmw X5, high Oil loss ( about 1qt per 1000 miles), PCV tested, BMW indicates that it is a 5 on a scale of 6 which will then be replaced (3 is normal). What else could be causing the high oil...

oil sep not causing this issue, this would be caused by the crankcase valve both on 6 and 8 cyl,if you have a 6 the part is locaed below the intake behind the throttle, you must also remove the dip stick and clean out the drain on the stick,if you have a 8 cyl than you must rere the intake and repl the rear cover and oil drain, also this issue is more commonly found when temps are very cold.either way this should be replace to prevent furhter damages to the enigine.this should solve the oil consumption issue as long as there are no other leaks present

My 1997 Hyundai excel has 144000km. I just put in 2 litres of oil 2 weeks ago as the oil light flashed on. Yesterday the oil light flashed on again so i have again put another 2 litres in. i do approx...

if there no leaks , now those older excels had problems with the rear main seals leaking with high milage, but you will see it under the car. also bad valve seals will cause a large oil consumption issue, but often you will see blue/ white smoke out the tailpipe esp on start up.

High oil Consumption, BMW M5

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!
