I've have the same problem with my 2001 kia sportage and found this is a very common problem with this vehical per vehical complaint website. Kia is not sure why this happens and has no fix. If you find something that works please share with rest of us. Good luck :(
Most mechanic shops would be able to check the fuel pressure coming from your fuel pump. Before you do that, try replacing your fuel filter. If your fuel filter has gotten clogged, there may be enough resistance to kill the motor. It is possible that you have some other obstruction in your fuel system, like a clogged fuel line that will also cause this problem.
I know that it will cost a little bit of money, but personally, I would take it to a shop and have them test the fuel pressure in 2 places if they can. First they should check as close to the fuel pump as possible (without taking out the tank to charge you for that too). If there is low pressure there, it's very likely that it's you fuel pump. If everything checks out there, they should be able to check the pressure at the fuel rail (most of them have a cap, like a valve stem). if there is low pressure there, most likely there is a clog in you fuel line (they are probably formed fit lines, so they may be pricey), but if everything still checks out, I would see if they could flush the rails/injectors, hopefully fixing the problem. If the problem still shows....... I hate to say it....... but it could probably your injectors, and they can be very expensive.

I sould have mentioned I already changed the fuel filter.
I've noticed when trying to start it it's making a whining noise. Does that help anyone narrow the problem? thx
