Ford expedition ran out of gas

Ran out of gas and What?

Won't start?

Could have ruined an already worn fuel pump

Turn key on/engine off should hear pump run
for 3 or 4 seconds

Check fuel pressure if it runs with a gauge on
injector fuel rail or with a professional scan tool
data.

Try spraying the throttle body to see if it will run

Try disconnecting the battery AFTER you check for
codes,stored data, etc & write down what you get

I had the same problem a few years ago with my '99 ml430. It was my fuel injectors.

I assume you put fuel in the tank. This car uses a small high pressure fuel pump to pump gas to the engine, this pump is located inside the fuel tank, the tiny pump depends on the gas it sits in for cooling and for lubrication, if you run out of gas you quickly damage the pump, in fact any time you run below 1/8 tank you cause it to run hot, so you might get away with running out of gas once or twice by you always run the risk of the pump freezing up from lack of lubrication and cooling when you run out of gas, which is what you have likely done.

Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.

Ford 2001 f250 v10, ran out of gas, filled tank and still won't start

check for fuel pressure at fuel rail if no pressure or low pressure check and change fuel filter while ya have it off or it could be relay switch that would be the least expensive place to start good luck

My 2001 L Series Saturn ran out of gas, then after 1 gallon of gas was added to the tank, the engine would not turn over. Any suggestions for how to get it to start?

the fact that it won`t turn over is just a coincedent it happened when you ran out of gas.i`m assuming that you mean the motor won`t turn over at all and not that you mean it will turn over and not start.if it is the latter then the fuel needs time to fill the lines and pressurize the fuel system while cranking over.

COULD BE ENGINE FLOODING DUE TO BAD SPARK PLUGS.DIRTY LEAKING FUEL INJECTORS.CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS.A FAULTY COOLANT SENSOR OUT OF CALIBRATION WILL CAUSE RICH FUEL MIXTURE FLOODING ENGINE.

CHECK ENGEINE LIGHT GIVE CODE 300 AND 400 FOR

P0300 Random Misfire Detected

P0400 means random/multiple cylinder misfires.

Replace your spark plug cables. All of them.

Do you have fuel pressure now since adding fuel?
Maybe you did not run out of gas ......but just happened to run out of fuel pressure caused by a bad fuel pump at a low fuel level?
Maybe you need a fuel pump.

The location of the cps on a 2001 ml430

IT IS IN THE REAR OF THE ENGINE WHERE IT MOUNTS TO THE TRANSMISSION.THE SENSOR READS THE NOTCHES ON THE FLYWHEEL.ABOUT A 1/2 HOUR JOB.

You need to bleed the system, turn key to run postion then wait two seconds and turn off again do this a dozen times then hold foot pedal to floor and crank engine, this will clear fault codes and prime system then it should start, if you need more help post here for more information.

Thx worked for me. 99 ML430 with M113 V8. CPS, MAF, Fuel pump replaced. Also cleaned TB and EGR, crank no start with fuel smell with no DTCs (codes). After key cycling to pos 2 (no crank) several times it started. Still rough idle but probably because plugs are old and Autolites, going to replace with NGKs.
