'97 2.2L base Cavalier idles rough and randomly stalls

1997 2.2L base model automatic Cavalier usually idles rough, and randomly stalls when stopped. Drives fine, but idles poorly when stopped. This is an ongoing problem, but is intermittent. Took the car in for this problem, they replaced my fuel pump, fuel tank, and crank shaft position sensor. I've also replaced the alternator, spark plugs, and wires. What is wrong with my car?!

You might also want to check the timing on your engine. it's not unusual for these motors to skip a notch & your intake & exhaust valves will be out of order.

Not much you can do without troubleshooting the problem. It could be a crank sensor, ignition module, low fuel pressure, a vac leak, or a list of other things.
Usually if you have a sensor problem you will get a check engine light, but not always.

Rough idling

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Rough Idle - 1997 Cavalier RS 2.2L SFI-OHV 4-134

WEll it is possible it could be the idle air control. one the most comon problems is the fuel pressure regulator. To check it find the fuel rail the fuel regulator will have one vacuum hose on it remove the hose and check to see if it is wet with fuel if not have some one trun the key on or start the car if it leaks fuel out the regulator is bad. This would explain why its hard to start when it sits because it floods out the motor
