VW Transporter fuel & temp gauge not working

Fuel & temperature gauge not working. I have an early Transporter 2.4l diesel camper van. I have a problem in that the fuel & temp gauges only seem to work when they feel like it.
There is no rhyme nor reason as to when this happens but they both come & go together.
Any ideas please ?

Hey there, got a 2.3l petrol, but i'm pretty sure the dash should be identical! my dash was doing the same trick, so, unclip the dash pod from the back, and it hinges forwards, and should gently pull clean off, (clips straight back on again!) and then there are four screws, round the edge, one virtually in each corner. these 4 hold the dials to the main dash. once these have been removed, the dials unit will come off. after having pulled this up, you'll see that there's a main connector, going to the back on the unit, disconnect this, give it a light wire wool-ing, get the shine back into the terminals on the unit side. give it a good blow to remove and wire wool left, and prevent shorting between contacts. right. now, take a small strip of card, (playing card thickness) and cut it into a rectangle to fit behind the contacts. (the contacts are on the unit side, and they're a peice of flexible plastic wrapped over a shaped piece of plastic). once the card's pushed behind, it'll make sure there's good contact between the terminals, and the socket. give the socket a good blow out, make sure there's no **** in there, re-connect, and assemble the dashboard. hopefully you should not find that it all works well, and all the little lights on the dash will glow brightly, just like new!

hope this helps,
cheers, ben!

When I ride long distances and I arrive at my destination I can turn the motor of and re start it immediately. However if I want to start it after about a half an hour then it will not fire up.

Might be a sensor. The coolant temp sensor is used by the computer to determine whether to power glow plugs and determine amount and timing of initial squirt of fuel. Fully warmed up diesels start very easy (very forgiving). And when it is fully cold the sensor may work correctly. Try unplugging the coolant temp sensor. This will cause an error and the computer will over compensate with a very rich squirt to insure it's able to start. I'm not familiar with that particular engine so make sure you find the sensor that reports to the computer and not another one that may operate a temperature gauge. I have a VW 1.9l diesel and it also has a temp gauge inside the fuel pump to report temp of fuel. When that fails you get hard starting. Good Luck!

Vw transporter van 1994 overheating

run fault codes and look for EVAP solenoid /sensor / valve as you may be developing a vacuum lock in the fuel line that is starving the fuel system.

Ran out of diesel on a 96 vw transporter van, what do I do, I've put deisel in the tank now what?

Need to change the fuel filter first, you may pulled some debris from the fuel tank. After replacing the filter you must prime the system to get it to start. Have a strong battery as you may have to crank a while to get the air out of the system. You can get the air out bt loosening a couple of the injector lines at the injector, crank engine untill fuel comes from the lines, continue to crank engine till it starts to run, will run rought untill you tighten the lines and let it run for a few seconds,. sounds more complicayed than it really is. Let me know if this helped

Retiming of vw transporter diesel pump

hi there if you remove the cam pully wich drives the diesel pump you will see a key way in the end of the cam turn the engine untill the key way is flat ( i use a streight edge in the keyway and turn until it is level with the top of the cylinder head ROCKER COVER REMOVED once this is aligned up there is a mark o the back of the diesel pump pully thiss aligns up with a groove between two castings on the side of the pump at the front of the engine once all these are aligned up you can put on the belt ( it may ot start right away this wil be due to needing to bleed up the fuel ONLY IF PUMP BEEN REMOVED and bleeding up the fuel can be a right pain. hope thos helps ben
