On the freelander it's done that way so none of the pistons strike the valves like when taking the cylinder head off as these pistons come very close to the valves on these engines but if you take off the crankshaft pulley wheel the true mark will be on the gear that the cambelt sits around use this mark on this gear if you want no1 piston at tdc and set the cams up with their irrelevant marks at the same time
trying to remember here ,same as a rover earlier model ,crank mark is on the flywheel through a rectangular access hole ,camshaft is either a slot on the back of the cam or a 8mm hole in the gearwheel ,my memory is getting bad ,just looked in a rover haynes manual for the K series engine which is the one in this vehicle and the two cam marks go inwards together and their is two marks on the crank geared pulley which has one mark either side of raised line top right 20? around on the front cover .forget the first part of post that could be a ford zetec engine .
