If your car is spitting and sputtering than you have a timing problem, you either need a new timing belt or if you have a new belt it is installed improperly. probably off by one or two teeth.

Check that the coil is functioning; the coil wire is intact; also check the battery cables and connections, especially the negative ground to the chassis.

Why does my 1998 sebring idle fine but sputter badly under load.

Does it use spark plug wires or individual ignition coils for the each plug?. My 98 intrepid uses coils and occasionally I have to change them out cause it would start to miss when normal temperature was achieved. If it uses wires, try replacing them, along with the spark plugs.

The car is sputtering and backfiring. After awhile

buy a couple bottles of gasline antifreeze (it absorbs water). add one bottle to your gas tank now and another bottle next time you fill up. you should notice results almost immediately.

Runs good til it gets hot, then backfires and sputters

Have the catalitic converter check sounds like it may be clogged. This will cause it to choke off exhaust when it gets hot
