Hi, is this tapping loud, they are normally clattery, especialy if fitted with a lucas or cav fuel pump.
an injector has lots of smoke and thumps in most cases.

diesels need a fast turning starter to compress the air to a hot enough temperature to ignite the atomised fuel at the injectors. There in lies the problem I would suggest. 1 the battery is not good enough .2 the injectors are dirty /blocked and are squirting and not atomising. IF this is the case you will be getting "diesel knock". If you have removed the turbo then you will need to get the fuel pump reset as there will be excess fuel being used ( knocking and black smoke on acceleration). AS for quietening down the engine and compartment it has taken much engineering by manufacturers to get the engine as quite as they are now and this engine was noticeably noise when new.
may be locked up..these get spun by exhaust gasses coming out of the manifold..if it does not spin..its locked up and needs replaced..may find one at a salvage yard..new ones arent cheap...
might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard
right three squirts of fairy liquid and yes it musat be fairy and not the thin cheap one into the oil, then a pint of diesel poured in as well and run vehicle for a week ,drain oil and then refill with a diesel turbo oil cheapest you can get from supermarket ,and repeat the performance leave for a week or two becaue by this time the cam follower should have cleared itself a bit and the oil pressure should make it start adjusting ,Then after a few weeks change the oil again and the oil filter ,then forever after change oil every 6000miles with the diuesel turbo oil and oil filter every third oil change ,Do not use wynns or stp additives or fancy oils that claim a long life just a cheap diesel turbo oil and the inside of the engine will stay clean and the tappets will always adjust themselves .Their now isnt that simple compared to some motoring mags advice which are written by people that dont know the meaning black grime under fingernails ,just advertisers revenue that they write nice stories for
black smoke is not enough air or excessive fuel
if turbo , the turbo is not working and boosting, injector failure
incorrect fuel in system ( petrol instead of diesel)
water in fuel will damage injector tips
lifters noisy, lots of miles on engine?as oil pressure gets higher and engine warms up(everything expands a little and quietens a little)it gets better, try fresh oil thats thicker for worn engines, and or check tappets(valve adjustment)if its applicable to this engine
I have a Toyota Hilux 3.0 KZ-TE fitted with a intercooler and on Saterday on a 4x4 outing the engine light on the dashboard came on and the motor started spluttering and excessive white smoke came out of the exhaust. The problem persisted for several minutes and then went away. The verdict from other 4x4 owners was that the turbo needs an overall, I cannot understand this as it is fine again with no mechanical interferance.
